Author Susan Kadian Gopigian began collecting Armenian proverbs many decades ago when she lived in Delray, Michigan. She collected hundreds of proverbs in the Armenian language, then transliterated them using the English alphabet and also translated them into English to make them accessible to all readers, whether they know Armenian or not. The author selected certain proverbs for inclusion because she heard them frequently or because they reflect the former Armenian way of life. That she was able to meet the challenges involved in collecting and editing Armenian proverbs can only be described as a true labor of love.

All cultures have proverbs that capsulize subjects simply and effectively. Many of these are cross-cultural. For example, according to a Danish proverb, "The greater the fear, the nearer the danger," while a Latin proverb says, "The less there is of fear, the less there is danger." This work includes over 20,000 proverbs from more than 120 languages, nationalities and ethnic groups. The proverbs are arranged under 1,300 headings (e.g., accidents, divided loyalty, marriage, prosperity, shame), and each includes the nationality, group or language in which it originated. Comprehensive keyword and subject indexes allow access to the material in multiple ways.

These folk-tales were told by simple people--vine-dressers, farm-laborers, millers--and were preserved by word of mouth, to be repeated for entertainment in the coffee-house, or at home during the long, hard winters. There are fables here, too, selected from the collections of medieval scholars and philosophers, while the expressive and often humorous proverbs show the ways of the world through shrewd Armenian eyes.

What was the influence of the Soviet Union on the food ways of Armenia? What strange and exotic fruits and herbs are sold in Armenia's markets? Why do Armenians go to cemeteries to 'feed' the dead? What role did coffee play in Armenian marriage rituals?
