Being the great plain of the St. Lawrence in the province of Quebec, where clay is found up to 100 feet in thickness. Clay beds of smaller extent are also found at the higher levels up to 700 feet above the sea, where they occur chiefly as terraces, bordering streams. A very extensive Sheet of clay, alto gether detached from the southerly areas, is found along the line of the National Transcontinental Railway in Northern Ontario and Quebec. Surface clays occur rather widespread in the provinces of Mani toba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, especially in the Red River and Saskatchewan valleys.
