Thermally stimulated processes include a number of phenomena - either physical or chemical in nature - in which a certain property of a substance is measured during controlled heating from a 'low' temperature. Workers and graduate students in a wide spectrum of fields require an introduction to methods of extracting information from such measurements. This book gives an interdisciplinary approach to various methods which may be applied to analytical chemistry including radiation dosimetry and determination of archaeological and geological ages. In addition, recent advances are included, such as ionic thermocurrent of general order kinetics, polarization thermocurrents and some aspects of the superlinear dependence on the dose of thermoluminescence

The use of isoconversional kinetic methods for analysis of thermogravimetric and calorimetric data on thermally stimulated processes is quickly growing in popularity. The purpose of this book is to create the first comprehensive resource on the theory and applications of isoconversional methodology. The book introduces the reader to the kinetics of physical and chemical condensed phase processes that occur as a result of changing temperature and discusses how isoconversional analysis can provide important kinetic insights into them. The book will help the readers to develop a better understanding of the methodology, and promote its efficient usage and successful development.

The relation between thermoluminescence curves and thermally stimulated current curves is discussed assuming that electrons are stimulated from traps to recombination centers through the conduction band. A method for calculating the recombination probability by simultaneous measurement of thermoluminescence and thermally stimulated current is given. Some special cases are discussed more thoroughly, especially the case of an extrinsic semiconductor (semiconducting diamond for example), heated according to a hyperbolic heating programme. A preliminary comparison of theory and experiment is made. (Author).

Changing the temperature of a substance can stimulate dramatic changes of its state. These changes can be intermolecular (physical) and intramolecular (chemical) in nature. Physical changes occur without breaking intramolecular bonds, and lead to transitions between the four major phases: gas, liquid, crystal, and glass. Chemical changes are associated with chemical reactions that originate from breaking intramolecular bonds. Phase transitions as well as chemical reactions occur at finite rates. Measuring the rates of processes is the realm of kinetics. The kinetics of thermally stimulated processes is routinely measured using thermal analysis techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Knowing the process rates and their dependence on temperature is of vital importance for understanding the behavior of materials exposed to variations in temperature. In recent years, thermal analysis kinetics has made significant progress by developing computational tools for reliable kinetic analysis. It has also expanded its traditional application area to newly developed nano- and biomaterials. This Special Issue is a series of papers that reflect recent developments in the field and highlight the essential role of thermal analysis kinetics in understanding the processes responsible for the thermal behavior of various materials.

Currently, thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) are the main techniques for studying the luminescence properties of several materials, mainly insulators called phosphors. Frequently, however, students and experts alike need to clarify some concepts related to the effects and defects present in the radiation interaction with solids generated by these phenomena. In this book, a series of questions and corresponding answers give a clearer explanation about the concepts, theory and models related to TL and OSL, including applications in important related areas.Students, researchers and teachers will find this book a good guide for understanding TL and OSL as methods for studying the nature of luminescent solids. It provides a quick way for clearing doubts in the concepts and terminology concerning OSL and TL, as it is intended to answer many questions which can be encountered in practical applications.

In this volume, international leading experts in the study of thermally and optically luminescence give an up-to-date, comprehensive coverage of the theoretical and experimental aspects of these subjects, as well as their applications. The theory of thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) are discussed in detail including mainly solid state models of localized and delocalized transitions. These models cover the effects occurring during the excitation by irradiation and the read-out by heating or by exposure to light. The methods described consist of analytical mathematical considerations as well as numerical simulations. The main application of these effects, namely radiation dosimetry, includes personal and environmental dosimetry, as well as retrospective dosimetry and the dosimetry of cosmic radiation and space missions. Also discussed in detail are archaeological and geological dating, the use of luminescence dosimetry in medical physics as well as general applications in geosciences, other model subjects such as time-resolved luminescence and thermally assisted OSL, and the sister-subject of thermoluminescence in photosynthetic materials.
