Excerpt from An Oration, Delivered in St. Michael's Church, Charleston, South-Carolina, on Tuesday, the Fourth of July, 1815: In Commemoration of American Independence, by Appointment of the South-Carolina State Society of Cincinnati It was born of the fpirit of Liberty - cradled amid the councils of Wifdpm - and nurfed in the arms of Valor. It'defcended from an unnatural Pa rent, who, like Saturn, attempted to de roy its own offspring. But i'till it fiourithed. Earth yielded it her treafuresu-ocean was its barrier and its mine; and its infant ruggles for exiti ence were crowned with vielory and fame. How many patriot hearts bled for its proteelion - how many fainted fpirits hovered over it in the hour -of danger! The brave men of the Ball came to fight its battles; for the foul of chivalry delights to defend the weak, \and reiene the oppre . It ourilhed beyond hope or expeetation. The firi'c link that tyranny forged to en ave it, was fevered by its fword; and difdaining to follow in leading firings an arbitrary, unkind and defpotic parent, it a 'umed the Independent Ration; for which na ture had defigned it. The tear of filial piety marked the feparation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. John R. Grodzinski’s volume in the Routledge Research Guides to American Military Studies covers the origins of the War of 1812 - the major post-revolutionary conflict fought between the United States and the British Empire - providing a general overview of the significant battles that occurred at sea and in the area of the present-day Great Lakes and U.S.-Canadian border. The key features of this research guide are the bibliographical elements, namely lists of published books, articles, and on-line resources pertaining to the War of 1812, as well as references to archival resources available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. The War of 1812 is a valuable supplementary resource for institutional libraries on both sides of the Atlantic.
