Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Political Economy The favourable reception of the Author's Guide to the Study of Political Economy, translated and published in England and America at the suggestion and under the auspices of the late Professor Jevons, paved the way for an English version of what was begun as a third edition of that work, though it has finally shaped itself into a completely new book. In preparing the following pages, enriched by the author with important changes and valuable additions, both he and the Translator have received much encouragement and aid from the appreciative reviews of the Italian original published in the Journal of the Statistical Society, and in Professor Edgeworth's Economic Journal, as well as from the paragraph devoted to it in the Nation (New York). Following a hint given in the last-named periodical, the Translator has compiled are Index of Subjects; he has also enlarged the Index of Authors, and has added, under the designation of Sources, important anonymous works, periodicals and collections frequently referred to. Excerpt from An Introduction to Political Economy It has seemed to the author that one difficulty with many economic treatises is that they have no one clear aim, that they are, so to speak, straddles. This difficulty he is seeking to avoid, and consequently he has had only one class in mind in this revision. It is first of all the general reader for whom the book is designed, and it is the general reader whose needs have been kept constantly in view. For him it primarily exists, and to his requirements have been entirely subordinated all considerations based on its possible use as a text-book. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Political Economy: Or Elementary View of the Manner in Which the Wealth of Nations Is Produced, Increased, Distributed, and Consumed If the strange discordance of opinion, which has lately been manifested on the report of the Bullion Committee, affords a lamentable evidence how little the true principles of Political Economy are understood in this country, the uncommon interest which the controversy has excited seems however to warrant the hope that the attempt to render the science more accessible will not be deemed altogether unworthy of public approbation. It is particularly for those to whom rank or fortune hold out the noble prospect of being one day called to legislate for their fellow-subjects, that I have condensed the elements of a science on which so great a share of human happiness depends, and which, on that account, can never be though repulsive by those who feel interested in the welfare of their country. I lay no claim to either originally or invention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Study of Political Economy: Hints to Students and Teachers The existence of this little book is due to an attempt to convey, by lectures to students, an understanding of the position which political economy holds in regard, not merely to its actual usefulness for every citizen, but to its disciplinary power, and to the qualities of mind which are necessary for success in the study. It was hoped, thereby, that young men might more intelligently decide whether they should begin the study, and, even when they had purr sued it for a time, whether they should continue it. Each man by his own judgment, after an analysis such as is given within of the powers required for the study of political economy, should be enabled to come to a decision for himself more wisely than any one else could reach it for him. Excerpt from Political Economy Definition of the Science. - We propose in the following treatise to give an outline of the science which treats of the Nature, the Production, and the Distribution of Wealth. To that science we give the name of Political Economy. Our readers must be aware that that term has often been used in a much wider sense. The earlier writers who assumed the name of Political Economists avowedly treated not of Wealth but of Government. Mercier de la Riviere entitled his work The Natural and Essential Organization of Society, and professed to propose an organization "which shall necessarily produce all the happiness that can be enjoyed on earth." Sir James Steuart states, that "the principal object of the science is to secure a certain fund of subsistence for all the inhabitants, to obviate every circumstance which may render it precarious, and to provide everything necessary for supplying the wants of the society." The modern continental writers have in general entered into an equally extensive inquiry. "Political Economy," says M. Storch, "is the science of the natural laws which determine the prosperity of nations, that is to say, their wealth and their civilization." M. Sismondi considers "the physical welfare of man, so far as it can be the work of government, as the object of Political Economy." "Political Economy," says M. Say, "is the economy of society; a science combining the results of our observations on the nature and functions of the different parts of the social body." The modern writers of the English school have in general professed to limit their attention to the theory of Wealth; but some of the most eminent among them, after having expressed their intention to confine themselves within what appears to us to be their proper province, have invaded that of the general legislator or the statesman.
