In 1969 the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) established the Committee on Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS). The subject of air pol- tion was from the start, one of the priority problems under study within the fra- work of various pilot studies undertaken by this committee. The organization of a periodic conference dealing with air pollution modeling and its application has become one of the main activities within the pilot study relating to air pollution. The first five international conferences were organized by the United States as the pilot country; the second five by the Federal Republic of Germany; the third five by Belgium; the next four by The Netherlands; and the next five by Denmark; and with this one, the last three by Portugal. th This volume contains the papers and posters presented at the 27 NATO/CCMS International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution Modeling and Its Application held in Banff, Canada, 24-29 October 2004. The key topics at this ITM included: Role of Atmospheric Models in Air Pollution Policy and Abatement Strategies; Integrated Regional Modeling; Effects of Climate Change on Air Quality; Aerosols as Atmospheric Contaminants; New Developments; and Model Assessment and Verification. 104 participants from North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia attended th the 27 ITM. The conference was jointly organized by the University of Aveiro, Portugal (Pilot Country) and by The University of Calgary, Canada (Host Country). A total of 74 oral and 22 poster papers were presented during the conference.

Containing the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Air Pollution, this book is the latest in a well established series. It addresses various aspects of a topic that is of considerable worldwide concern due to its known impact on health and the environment. The need to balance concern for the environment with the demand for generating economic growth makes air pollution a particularly challenging problem. Further complicating the picture, the widespread nature and effects of air pollution make it an issue that requires not just local but global attention and cooperation. Science can help us identify the nature and scale of air pollution impacts. It is therefore essential in guiding government decisions regarding the most appropriate and effective regulations. As we learn ever more about the basic science of air pollution, and its application, we are better able to predict, assess, and mitigate its effects, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. This book presents advances in our knowledge of the science of air pollution. Topics covered include Air Pollution Modelling; Air Pollution Mitigation; Air Pollution Management; Aerosols and Particles; Emission Studies; Exposure and Health Effects; Indoor Air Pollution; Monitoring and Measuring; Case Studies; Emerging Technologies; Power Generation and Air Pollution; Incineration Plant Studies; Air Pollution Chemistry; Global and Regional Studies; Policy and Legislation.

This book presents a wealth of new information that enables environmental scientists and authorities to design methods for measuring and modelling emission rates related to specific pollution sources, and thus to generate improved emission inventories and reduction strategies. The text shows how to carry out experiments to verify emission data, including tunnel and open motorway studies, comprehensive city experiments and tracer experiments.

Abstract: "In this paper the authors investigate individuals' exposure to indoor air pollution. Using new survey data from Bangladesh, they analyze exposure at two levels--differences within households attributable to family roles, and differences across households attributable to income and education. Within households, they relate individuals' exposure to pollution in different locations during their daily round of activity. The authors find high levels of exposure for children and adolescents of both sexes, with particularly serious exposure for children under 5. Among prime-age adults, they find that men have half the exposure of women (whose exposure is similar to that of children and adolescents). They also find that elderly men have significantly lower exposure than elderly women. Across households, they draw on results from their previous paper (Dasgupta and others, 2004), which relate pollution variation across households to choices of cooking fuel, cooking locations, construction materials, and ventilation practices. They find that these choices are significantly affected by family income and adult education levels (particularly for women). Overall, the authors find that the poorest, least-educated households have twice the pollution levels of relatively high-income households with highly-educated adults. For children in a typical household, pollution exposure can be halved by adopting two simple measures--increasing their outdoor time from 3 to 5 or 6 hours a day, and concentrating outdoor time during peak cooking periods. The authors recognize that weather and other factors may intervene occasionally, and that child supervision outdoors may be difficult for some households. However, the potential benefits are so great that neighbors might well agree to pool outdoor supervision once they became aware of the implications for their children's health. This paper--a product of the Infrastructure and Environment Team, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to study environmental health issues in developing countries"--World Bank web site.

Once pollutants are released into the atmosphere, they cannot be removed easily nor can the reaction with atmospheric constituents be ceased. However, through enhancing our understanding of control technology, further addition of pollution can be forestalled. Through better understanding of innovations in the field of air pollutant control technology and modelling, better cost-effective control equipment can be designed to achieve a clean biosphere for sustainable life in the near future. Global Perspectives on Air Pollution Prevention and Control System Design is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on the understanding of the basic concepts of air pollution, modeling concepts, development of various models for source-specific pollutants, and dispersion. While highlighting topics such as climate change, fossil fuels, and motor vehicle emissions, this publication explores the links between the global impact on climate change and modeling concepts of indoor air pollutants. This book is ideally designed for professors, students, researchers, environmental agencies, environmentalists, policymakers, and government officials, seeking current research on future solutions in critical fields of air pollution.
