This volume concisely presents fundamental ideas, results, and techniques in linear algebra and mainly matrix theory. Each chapter focuses on the results, techniques, and methods that are beautiful, interesting, and representative, followed by carefully selected problems. For many theorems several different proofs are given. The only prerequisites are a decent background in elementary linear algebra and calculus.

Address vector and matrix methods necessary in numerical methods and optimization of linear systems in engineering with this unified text. Treats the mathematical models that describe and predict the evolution of our processes and systems, and the numerical methods required to obtain approximate solutions. Explores the dynamical systems theory used to describe and characterize system behaviour, alongside the techniques used to optimize their performance. Integrates and unifies matrix and eigenfunction methods with their applications in numerical and optimization methods. Consolidating, generalizing, and unifying these topics into a single coherent subject, this practical resource is suitable for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students in engineering, physical sciences, and applied mathematics.

This book project was initiated at The Tribute Workshop in Honour of Gunnar Sparr and the follow-up workshop Inequalities, Interpolation, Non-commutative, Analysis, Non-commutative Geometry and Applications INANGA08, held at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Lund University in May and November of 2008. The resulting book is dedicated in celebration of Gunnar Sparr's sixty-fifth anniversary and more than forty years of exceptional service to mathematics and its applications in engineering and technology, mathematics and engineering education, as well as interdisciplinary, industrial and international cooperation. This book presents new advances in several areas of mathematics and engineering mathematics including applications in modern technology, engineering and life sciences. Thirteen high-quality chapters put forward many new methods and results, reviews of up to date research and open directions and problems for future research. A special chapter by Gunnar Sparr and Georg Lindgren contains a historical account and important aspects of engineering mathematics research and education, and the implementation of the highly successful education programme in Engineering Mathematics at Lund Institute of Technology, where not only the mathematical sciences have played a role. This book will serve as a source of inspiration for a broad spectrum of researchers and research students.

The aim of the present book is to show, in a broad and yet deep way, the state of the art in computational science and engineering. Examples of topics addressed are: fast and accurate numerical algorithms, model-order reduction, grid computing, immersed-boundary methods, and specific computational methods for simulating a wide variety of challenging problems, problems such as: fluid-structure interaction, turbulent flames, bone-fracture healing, micro-electro-mechanical systems, failure of composite materials, storm surges, particulate flows, and so on. The main benefit offered to readers of the book is a well-balanced, up-to-date overview over the field of computational science and engineering, through in-depth articles by specialists from the separate disciplines.

Engineers and scientists need to have an introduction to the basics of linear algebra in a context they understand. Computer algebra systems make the manipulation of matrices and the determination of their properties a simple matter, and in practical applications such software is often essential. However, using this tool when learning about matrices, without first gaining a proper understanding of the underlying theory, limits the ability to use matrices and to apply them to new problems. This book explains matrices in the detail required by engineering or science students, and it discusses linear systems of ordinary differential equations. These students require a straightforward introduction to linear algebra illustrated by applications to which they can relate. It caters of the needs of undergraduate engineers in all disciplines, and provides considerable detail where it is likely to be helpful. According to the author the best way to understand the theory of matrices is by working simple exercises designed to emphasize the theory, that at the same time avoid distractions caused by unnecessary numerical calculations. Hence, examples and exercises in this book have been constructed in such a way that wherever calculations are necessary they are straightforward. For example, when a characteristic equation occurs, its roots (the eigenvalues of a matrix) can be found by inspection. The author of this book is Alan Jeffrey, Emeritus Professor of mathematics at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has given courses on engineering mathematics at UK and US Universities.
