Thirteen papers by archaeologists from North and South America on the archaeology of coastal Ecuador, Peru, and Chile. The authors have all emphasized comparative approaches to prehispanic societies along the Pacific coast. They give preference neither to high theory nor to case-specific empirical details, but rather attempt to answer theoretically important research questions with appropriate methodologies and empirical datasets--ones that are amenable to a broad comparative view.

This book documents and disseminates experiences from a wide range of universities, across the five continents, which showcase how the principles of sustainable development may be incorporated as part of university programmes, and present transformatory projects and programmes, showing how sustainability can be implemented across disciplines. While complementing other volumes in the BTL series in its exploration of the state of the art of translator training, this collection of essays is solely focused on audiovisual translation, one of the most complex and dynamic areas of the translation discipline. The book offers an easily accessible yet comprehensive introduction to the fascinating subject of translating films, video games and other audiovisual material. Offering a balance between theory and practice, the main aim of this volume is to provide a wealth of teaching and learning ideas in areas such as subtitling, dubbing, and voice-over without forgetting the newer fields of subtitling for the deaf and audio description for the blind. The Didactics of Audiovisual Translation comes with an accompanying CD-Rom, highlighting its fundamentally interactive approach, and the activities proposed can be adapted to different learning environments and used with different language combinations.

Psychologist Sternberg explains the evolution of theories of intelligence and introduces within this historical context his own theory. His theory invokes components of three kinds: metacomponents--processes involved in planning, monitoring, and evaluating problem-solving activities; performance components--lower-order processes put into play to implement commands of the metacomponents; and knowledge acquisition components--activities instrumental in learning how to solve problems. Sternberg defines intelligence as mental self-management and shows how it is used both in day-to-day problem-solving and in the world of executive decisionmaking, and how it can be nurtured at any age. Sternberg criticizes both traditional notions of intelligence and intelligence tests. ISBN 0-670-80364-2: $19.95.
