Dee Brestin entreats: Sisters, we must treasure the two Bible books named after women (Ruth and Esther), for they are God's special gifts to us! Through Ruth, I have heard my Heavenly Father say, As Boaz was to Ruth, I am your Kinsman-Redeemer. Come to Me, let Me cover you, protect you, provide for you, and love you. You do not have to be wealthy, or famous, or male to be of value. Ruth made an enormous difference and became as precious to Naomi as seven sons. Some say women's friendships are shallow and catty. Some say relationships with mothers-in-law are impossible. My little Book of Ruth is a tribute to the redemptive love I can unleash through women. This guide is one of a series written by Dee especially with the interests of women, and the way they like to relate, in mind. Dee Brestin ministers to the hearts of women with her speaking and writing. Besides her many Bible study guides, she is the author of the bestsellers The Friendships of Women, The Friendships of Women Workbook, and We Are Sisters. She and her husband, Steve, are the parents of five children and live in Kearney, Nebraska. Other Bible Study Guides by Dee: and * A Woman's Journey through Esther and * A Woman's Journey through Luke and * The Joy of Women's Friendships and * The Joy of Hospitality and * The Joy of Eating Right and * A Woman of Value (Proverbs) and * A Woman of Insight (Ecclesiastes) and * A Woman of Joy (1-3 John)

An educator from Indiana moves to California, a new culture, to start a new life. She soon finds she is ill-equipped for her new surroundings, but rises like a storm to overcome or conceal any deficiencies. She is arrogant and self-confident, becoming a high society lady hosting lavish events and outlandish parties. She and her husband travel world-wide. They have multiple homes. They care for their family. They entertain their friends. They give back to their community. They support various charities. They never ever discuss their own needs, wants and providing for their future. In all the excitement and pleasure, they neglect themselves and the spiritual divine spark that brought them together. This story is one of having wealth, going through a calamitous downfall, collapse and failure and coming out the other side with simplicity and contentment. It is a life filled with abundance, affluence, some would say, “a life being lived in the lap of luxury.” It is a life filled with languish, distress, misery, desperation, wretchedness and dashed hopes. It is a life filled with sorrow, remorse, penance, sack cloth and ashes. It is a life filled with recovery, redemption, atonement and satisfaction. It is life filled with love, praise and forgiveness.

Anne-Mareike Wetter investigates how the books of Ruth, Esther and Judith contribute to the discussion about Israel's ethnic and religious identity in the formative period following the Babylonian Exile. Although each of these narratives deals with variations of the theme of survival in a hostile world, the question underlying them is a different one: “Who are we, and who is our 'other'?” The narratives are presented as sequels to Israel's history as put forward in other (now biblical) texts, and presuppose God's continuing involvement with his people. However, they subtly modify the way in which Israel can or should relate to her God by suggesting alternatives for official Temple worship or bypassing the latter altogether. While older prophetic texts make use of metaphoric language portraying Israel as YHWH's unfaithful wife, grieving widow, or ravaged virgin, Ruth, Esther and Judith can be construed as embodiments of Israel of a different kind. Wetter argues for a revisioning of Israel in and through the bodies of the three female characters, as a community which is simultaneously vulnerable and inviolable, marginalized and empowered. Their tricksterism, in all its comicality, underlines the precarious situation in which the women and the community they represent are caught. Yet it also has the power to both defeat threats from outside and amend Israel's self-perception on the inside. Israel no longer has to perceive of itself as a battered wife but as one who can deploy her qualities – seductive and otherwise – for the survival of the community.

Imagining the Other and Constructing Israelite Identity in the Early Second Temple Period

This volume sheds light on how particular constructions of the 'Other' contributed to an ongoing process of defining what 'Israel' or an 'Israelite' was, or was supposed to be in literature taken to be authoritative in the late Persian and Early Hellenistic periods. It asks, who is an insider and who an outsider? Are boundaries permeable? Are there different ideas expressed within individual books? What about constructions of the (partial) 'Other' from inside, e.g., women, people whose body did not fit social constructions of normalness? It includes chapters dealing with theoretical issues and case studies, and addresses similar issues from the perspective of groups in the late Second Temple period so as to shed light on processes of continuity and discontinuity on these matters. Preliminary forms of five of the contributions were presented in Thessaloniki in 2011 in the research programme, 'Production and Reception of Authoritative Books in the Persian and Hellenistic Period,' at the Annual Meeting of European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS).
