Excerpt from A Revision of the North American Species of Diaptomus The genus Diaptomus is of special interest to the student of plankton, because, in so many cases, it forms the major por tion of that part of the plankton which is available as food for fishes. It is true that in plankton - rich bodies of water, the largest collections consist, for the most part, of vegetable materi al, but a large proportion of the vegetable material is waste so far as concerns its serving directly as food for animals. It is true, too, that in some cases other Copepoda or Cladocera may form the bulk of the animal part of the plankton, but com mouly it is Diaptomus that is most prominent. Excerpt from The North American Species of Diaptomus: Thesis By far the greater part of the collections examined are the property of the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History. They represent localities distributed over the entire continent, from Massachusetts in the East to Oregon in the West, as far south as Florida and as far north as Canada, and including the following states: Massachusetts, Florida, Mississippi, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, California, Idaho, and Nevada. In addition to the above I have examined specimens from Manitoba, Newfoundland, and Greenland. The localities represented by these collections vary widely in character, ranging from temporary pools on the Illinois prairies to Lakes Michigan and Superior; from the warm lakes of the Florida swamps to the cold mountain lakes of the Rockies; and from the small head-water streams of the Kaskaskia to the sluggish Illinois and the mighty Mississippi. The collections were made at all seasons of the year and at nearly all times of the day and night. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This long-awaited book about non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) aims to cover gaps in our knowledge of these abundant but understudied palynological remains. NPPs, such as fungal spores, testate amoebae, dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs and animal remains, are routinely recovered from palynological preparations of marine or terrestrial material, from Proterozoic to recent geological times. This book gives the reader a comprehensive overview of the different types of NPPs, with examples from diverse time periods and environments. It provides guidance on sample preparation to maximize the recovery of these NPPs, detailed information on their diversity and ecological affinity, clarification on the nomenclature and demonstrates their value as environmental indicators. This volume will become the reference guide for any student, academic or practitioner interested in everything else in their palynological preparations.

Concerns about the effects of global climate change have focused attention on the vulnerability of circumpolar regions. This book offers a synthesis of the spectrum of techniques available for generating long-term environmental records from circumpolar lakes.
