In A Mountain Oasis, Susan York presents a richly illustrated socio-economic study of village life in Pakistan’s Yasin Valley, undertaken during one year spent living with a local family. It documents this dynamic agro-pastoral society at a time when few researchers were recording developments in these far-flung and difficult to reach mountain oases of the Hindukush. It is a record of a time when development interventions were in their beginnings, and before this area in Gilgit-Baltistan entered a crucial period of transformation. It provides solid comparative reference material for future research on this region, which is continuing to undergo challenging and complex changes.

When Emma and Ted loaded their 150 BSA motorcycle on the Italian Trans-Mediterranean ship sailing for Tunisia, North Africa their plan was to spend four months touring and camping through Tunisia. Due to language problems they boarded the ship without the proper papers and/or tickets.Arrival in the port of Tunis presented a cultural shock in addition to the information that camping would be impossible, as the English-speaking Arab agent explained, "We are having a war just now because of the French Ocupation Forces. After establishing their base camp at the Hostel in Bir el Bey ten miles from Tunis a series of adventures over the following four months enfolded. On a journey to the remote island of Djerba in southern Tunisia the small, over-loaded ferry, caught in a sudden squall nearly capsized. During a trip into the northern Sahara, south of the Oasis of Gabes they were caught in a life threatening sandstorm in the Sahara and a Locust Plague in the Gabes Oasis on the return journey north. An Arab named "Habib" added the element of intrigue. He assisted Ted in securing photographs of Bedouin Nomads. His basic motive was to secure the favors of Ted's wife Emma. When he began to resort to life-threatening tactics the assistance of the American Counsulate was required. With the cooperation of the French Occupation Forces Habib was restrained until safe passage could be secured from Tunis to Marsaille, France.

This book describes the Central Sahara region, bringing together an unprecedented combination of diverse and often historic research published in different languages in order to describe its varied landscapes and landforms. The Central Sahara region consists of Libya, Algeria, Mali, Niger and Chad, countries that share similar landscape histories and common landscape traits, including massifs, sand seas, paleowater features and large depressions. Furthermore, human settlement of this region goes hand-in-hand with climate and environmental changes and landscape evolution during the Holocene and earlier; hence, Central Saharan landscapes and landforms provide valuable insights into landscape–human relationships over long timescales. The book offers a comprehensive yet accessible reference source, drawing on both past and present interdisciplinary research and gathering the insights of authors from many different countries to explore a region that has largely been overlooked in available literature.

The title of this book is exactly what this book is all about. The Remarkable You is about the remarkable you! Unfortunately, most of us do not feel too remarkable because of our past mistakes, past misfortunes, present feelings/conditions, or personal insights into how we see our future. Therefore, instead of embracing the amazing design, purpose, and value of our lives, we tend to settle for whatever the world offers us and wherever the world allows us to fit in. Therefore, the purpose of this book is to inform you that you have purposefully been sent here to make the world a better place. You have been sent here to add beauty, color, hope, help, and encouragement to society. If you take one piece away from a thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle, the puzzle will be incomplete. Likewise, though there are over seven billion people on planet earth, the world is incomplete without you and your contributions regardless of how small and how little you may feel you have to offer. By the time you finish this book, I pray that you would not only begin to accept and understand how remarkable you are but also that you will likewise begin to soar from your cocoon state of mind and transform into the remarkable monarch butterfly that you are destined to be. Enjoy!
