By the early twentieth century, the gatherings of Masons, particularly of Shriners (Scottish Rite) and Knights Templars (York Rite) took on the character of conventions and vacation journeys. This Knights Templar Encampment used railroads to traverse 10,000 miles across the American West. The book offers humorous insights into the adventures and misadventures of middle class men set loose in the newly tamed American West, which only a few years previously had been a wild frontier. Also important here is a portrait of Gilded Age-era San Francisco before the 1906 earthquake which destroyed much of its historic center.
