Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene The work is divided into two books: inthe First I have arranged the chief subjects of hygiene in what is, for my purpose, the most convenient order, and have illustrated them by examples drawn from army life. I have also included some other topics, such as meteorology and statistics, which it is important medical officers should learn. In these several chapters I have thought constantly on what would be useful to army surgeons, who are often far from all books, or possibility of reference. So that, in some parts, I have endeavoured to make the book one of reference, though I have been obliged to compress it to the greatest degree. In the Second Book, the service of the soldier is more particularly described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene for Students, Physicians, and Medical Officers Prior to his departure for England in 1908, where he died nu expectedly, Dr. Harrington had been preparing for a revision of his Hygiene, the demand for which he foresaw. He had then largely completed the chapters on Milk and Disinfection. His manuscript, as well as the remainder of the volume, have been brought to date by the present writer. Dr. Harrington's work had won its way to an enviable position in the literature of one Of the most important branches of human knowledge. No effort has been spared to main tain its usefulness as an authoritative guide for all classes of readers interested in hygiene and sanitation. Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene: Designed for Sanitary and Health Officers, Practitioners and Students of Medicine The chemical causes of disease have been, within the past few years, entirely restricted to the action of chemical bodies upon the organism; that is, bodies externally applied or introduced purely from without. It has, however, been shown that under varying conditions there may be developed within the organism toxic agents in many instances more poisonous than forms usually introduced from without. Excerpt from Methods of Practical Hygiene, Vol. 1 of 2 I experienced great pleasure when Professor Crookes informed me that he was desirous of executing an English version of my book. I have consequently spared no trouble in carefully revising the text, taking into consideration the most recent advances Of science up to the latest date, and, as far as lay in my power, supplying the deficiencies which I had previously detected. The bacteriological chapters have undergone considerable remodelling in small details, in accordance with the most recent investigations; many addi tions have been made to the sections on Dwellings and Disinfection. N 0 portion has been left entirely unmodified. I have sought to avoid the introduction Of too many supple mental details, since the purpose Of such a work requires exposition of the principles Of research and recognition rather than the accumulation of endless details. Even as it is, a sufficient abundance has been introduced. A strict objectivity in the conflict Of the opinions of different schools has also been prominently before my mind. I know full well that, even in the present improved form, numerous quest-ions have remained untouched, or have only been noticed in passing, although they may occasionally concern the sanitarian. Absolute completeness can scarcely be combined with a modest bulk. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene, Vol. 2 Whoever considers carefully the record of the mediaeval epidemics, and seeks to interpret them by our present knowledge of the causes of disease, will surely become convinced that one great reason why those epidemics were so frequent and so fatal was the compression of the population in faulty habitations. Ill-contrived and closely packed houses, with narrow streets, often made winding for the purpose of defence; a very poor supply of water, and therefore a universal uncleanliness; a want of all appliances for the removal of excreta; a population of rude, careless, and gross habits, living often on innutritious food, and frequently exposed to famine from their imperfect system of tillage, - such were the conditions which almost throughout the whole of Europe enabled diseases to attain a range, and to display a virulence, of which we hare now scarcely a conception. The more these matters are examined, the more shall we be convinced that we must look, not to grand cosmical conditions; not to earthquakes, comets, or mysterious waves of an unseen and poisonous air; not to recondite epidemic constitutions, but to simple, familiar, and household conditions, to explain the spread and fatality of the mediaeval plagues. Section I. General Conditions of Health. The diseases arising from faulty habitations are in great measure, perhaps entirely, the diseases of impure air. Excerpt from Hygiene a Manual of Personal and Public Health The writing of a preface is perhaps superfluous for a book which has had a large and steady sale for nearly twenty years, and which has evidently met with the approval of a large constituency. A few words of introduction appear, however, desirable in view of the facts that the present edition has been almost entirely re-written; that a large amount of new matter has been introduced; and that, so far as is known, the comments on each subject represent the most recent and authoritative knowledge upon it. An attempt has been made to meet the requirements of medical students, as well as of science students and general readers, for whom former editions were chiefly intended. A large class of medical students and practitioners do not require the detailed statement of the subject contained in the larger text-books. For them, and, it is hoped, also for a large number of candidates for diplomas in public health and in sanitary science, the present edition will prove to be useful. At the same time, the subject has been treated as non-technically as is consistent with accuracy, in order to retain its suitability for non-medical readers. A large number of new illustrations have been introduced. The new chapters dealing with Dietetics, Trade Nuisances, Meteorological Observations, Tuberculosis, Disinfection, and Vital Statistics will, it is believed, enhance the value of the book. Attention is also drawn to the solutions of mathematical problems in the different branches of hygiene, of which a table of contents is given on page viii. Excerpt from Essentials of Practical Hygiene This little volume does not as sume to be a text-book or an elab orate treatise on the subject of hygiene. It has, however, been my aim to present the subject in its most important phases in such an abbreviated and practical form as to be of interest and value to peo ple who prefer simple facts rather than professional technicalities.
