Excerpt from A Library Primer At the request of a number of people interested I have revised, rewritten, and extended the original draft for publication in book form. Additional material has been taken from many sources. I have tried to give credit in good measure. The prevailing tendency among librarians is to share ideas, to give to one another the benefit of all their suggestions and experiences. The result is a large fund of library knowledge which is common prop erty. From this fund most of this book is taken. The table is a list Of the titles Of the chapters, or of the subjects treated in the book. The list is arranged, not alphabetically, but in the order Of treatment in the book. These titles are usually brief but may be Of sufficient length to indicate the scope and content of the chapters. The classifier can usually determine from the title page, preface, and contents the subject Of the book and consequently the class to which it belongs. Excerpt from The Punjab Library Primer The various subjects are taken up in the order\ in which they would naturally demand attention, were one privileged to set about the task of creating a library where none had previously existed. Few librarians, however, are fortunate enough to face such a virgin field. Usually one must decide What shall be done to improve a collection already in existence. Heroic treatment is often necessary and usually advisable. But too much should not be attempted at once, lest only confusion and discouragement result. It is often possible to take up the processes required to reorganize an old library in about the. Following order: (1) discard books that have outlived their usefulness; (2) classify; (3) paste in labels, dating slips and book pockets, and mark ownership (4) accession;(5) letter labels, dating slips and book cards; (6) shelf-list (7) catalogue. The same order of procedure is followed in handling the routine addi tions of new books in any library, preceded of course by a checking of invoices. Excerpt from A Primer of Library Practice In the succeeding chapters the writers have attempted to review generally modern library practice, to analyse the meaning, value and actual work of municipal libraries, and the effort is sub mitted to the reader in the hope that it may play some part in the creation of a wider understanding of, and sympathy with, a public institution which has yet to reach its highest functions, and to which it can only approach by a greater recognition on the part of the general public. While under obliga tion to no single work, the writers are indebted for inspiration and ideas to practically the whole field of modern library literature, and a select list of books which develop further the subjects dealt with in the following pages is appended. Excerpt from A Primer The idea of making use of familiar rhymes in teaching reading to children of primary grade is not a new one. We know how universal the knowledge of these rhymes is among children before they enter school; to meet with this known knowledge in their school life is always a pleasure to them. Some of the theories that have been advanced upon this subject have been put into practice by the writer of this book, with such a degree of success as to warrant the belief that the material might be of value to other primary teachers. The book contains a vocabulary differing but slightly from that of other primers, making it possible to use this in connection with other readers. The growth of the vocabulary is slow and progressive. The rhyme is a means of presentation. From the rhyme certain words which do not suggest ideas, such as where, there, this, and what, are easily acquired. The lessons following the rhyme furnish drill. Frequent repetition of words in the sentences is so varied as to avoid monotony. The stories are constructed with the idea of giving training in good oral expression. Certain pictures introduced furnish material for observation and language work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
