These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside A Layman's Life of Jesus: Look inside the book: The great church doctors might not like it, were they to hear it-this young carpenter with the soft words, and the radiance in His face, slipping back and forth from Galilee to the desert and from the desert to Galilee, proselyting the peasants, and telling them that God is not to be worshiped in the semi-heathen manner in which they are doing it at Jerusalem. ...The little carpenter shop in the narrow street at Nazareth is closed forever; Joseph, the father, has passed away, and sleeps with the sons of David; Mary, the mother, lives in the town of Cana, where she first came from; the young carpenter with the soft speech, the tender eyes, the golden hair, and the radiance on His face goes up, and down through Galilee-and they call Him 'The Light of the World.'

Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Life OF jesus and christianity. - But history does not stand alone in being unable to refuse the task of giving a scientific account Of the life of Jesus. The execution of the work is imperatively demanded by the Christian religion itself. The great interest which the person Of Jesus, his public ministry, and his fate, possess for Christianity is as clearly as possible shown by this fact, that of all its sacred writings, the four Gospels are unquestionably the best known and the most popular throughout the whole Christian world.1 The early Christian community might have rested satisfied with these four written Sources. It read in them how the life of Jesus was passed and from the fact that the Church handed down these writings from generation to generation as her sacred treasure, it might be regarded as an act of piety to believe in them in the smallest matters as well as in those of great importance without further question. But such an attitude can no longer be taken at the present day, and for these reasons. On the one hand, scholars have diligently applied themselves to the study of the Biblical writings, and more especially the Gospels. On the other hand, we know also, at least with approximate exactness, how it was that the New Testament arose. Thus it is now an established fact that. Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 4: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels The work of Dr Lange, translated in the accompanying volumes, holds among books the honourable position of being the most complete Life of our Lord, There are other works which more thoroughly investigate the authenticity of the Gospel records, some which more satisfactorily discuss the chronological difficulties involved in this most important of histories, and some which present a more formal and elaborate exegetical treatment of the sources; but there is no single work in which all these branches are so fully attended to, or in which so much matter bearing on the main subject is brought together, or in which so many points are elucidated. The immediate object of this comprehensive and masterly work, was to refute those views of the life of our Lord which had been propagated by Negative Criticism, and to substitute that authentic and consistent history which a truly scientific and enlightened criticism educes from the Gospels. It is now several years since the original work appeared in Germany, but the date of its first appearance will be reckoned a disadvantage only by those who are unacquainted with the recent history of theological literature. No work has in this interval appeared which has superseded, or can be said even to compete with this. So that, while it is no doubt a pity that the English-reading public should not have had access to this work long ago, we have now the comfort of receiving a book whose merits have been tested, and which claims our attention not in the doubtful tones of a stripling, but with the authoritative accent of one that has attained his majority. A cursory notice of the leading works which have more recently been added to this department of literature, may serve both to aid younger students in selecting what may suit their tastes or intentions, and to show that the present work is by no means out of date. And, first of all, there has been issued a new edition (1854) of the work of Dr Karl Hase (Das Leben Jesu), originally published in 1829. Excerpt from Jesus, His Opinions and Character, the New Testament Studies of a Layman The many books upon the same subject that have appeared within the last few years in this country and in other countries, where thought is active and free, indicate that, so far from being exhausted, the life of Jesus has only begun to be studied. Most of these books have been written with the purpose, more or less confessed, of strengthening and confirming the devout prepossessions by which they were inspired. Of the fewer of them written in a historic spirit, and regarding Jesus, his character, teachings, and influence as normal developments Of a Civilization that has advanced, not only by steady growth, but by strong impulses given to it by the incursion Of great men and the Spring-tide Of great epochs, some have been marred by lack Of method in their study and of consistency and probability in the character they have delineated; some by arbitrary marshalling Of the traditions to support a fanciful mythical theory; and still others by the confession, everywhere virtually expressed in them, that the barren compliment of sentimental adulation was to be Offered to a dethroned Deity in compensation for degrading him from the height of worship where reason had ceased to recognize him. Excerpt from Life of Jesus The twelve earlier editions Of this work differ from one an other only in trifling changes. The present edition, on the contrary, has been revised and corrected with the greatest care. During the four years since the book appeared, I have laboured incessantly to improve it. The numerous criticisms to which it has given rise have rendered the task in certain respects an easy one. I have read all those which contain anything important. I believe I can conscientiously affirm that not once have the outrage and the calumny which have been imported into them hindered me from deriving profit from the just Observations which those criticisms might contain. I have weighed everything, tested everything. If in certain cases people should wonder why I have not answered fully the censures which have been made with such extreme assurance, and as if the errors alleged had been proved, it is not that I did not know of these censures, but that it was impossible for me to accept them. In such cases I have gen erally added in a note the texts or the considerations which have kept me from changing my opinion, or else by some slight change Of expression I have endeavoured to show wherein lay the error of my critics. These notes, though very brief and doing little more than point out the original sources, are still enough to Show the intelligent reader the rea sonings that have guided me in the composition of my text. TO answer in detail all the charges that have been brought against me, it would have been necessary for me to triple or quadruple this volume. I Should have had to repeat thingswhich have already been well said, even in French. I must have gone into religions controversy, - a thing that I abso lutely forbid myself to do. I should have had to speak Of myself, a thing I never do. I write in order to put my ideas before those who seek the truth. As for those persons who in the interest of their belief must have it that I am an ignora mus, a lying spirit, or a man of bad faith, I make no attempt to modify their opinion. If that opinion is necessary for the peace of mind of certain pious people, I should feel a genuine scraple at disabusing them. Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt.
