The Girl with Nine Lives is a true adventure story—a candid personal memoir describing the first eighteen years of the author’s life, which began in foster care until she was adopted by a hardworking couple of faith. The book explores the author’s experiences growing up on the farm; her struggles learning to walk, run, ride a bike, and the many scrapes (both figurative and literal!) she got into as a daredevil and a dreamer. Born with a serious balance issue, doctors said Stephanie (or Stacy, in the book) would never walk, and should be relegated to an institution. Being given up for adoption left her feeling discarded and insecure. As she is raised by a loving family, and begins to experience victories, the author learns to see her value in the world, eventually finding her calling as a teacher. Faith has a strong presence in the book; Stacy grows in her faith, and comes to realize that God has a plan for her. With a childhood so full of amusing, frightening, and unusual adventures and misadventures, it really does seem like a miracle that the author emerged in one piece. Readers will find themselves rooting for young Stacy’s success, and at times, her survival!

For her first novel in more than nine years, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala has written a most unusual book in a career of distinctive and unique accomplishments. My Nine Lives is "Chapters of a Possible Past," as the subtitle declares. It is, as the author has commented, a book filled with "invented memories." Nine vignettes are linked to portray a rich life filled with searching, from London to Delhi, from Hollywood to New York. Each chapter gathers a different cast of characters, some new and some vaguely familiar, and the linked assembly is as exciting and illuminating as an artist's first show at a Soho gallery or a new play at the Studio Theater. After seventeen books, now in her 77th year, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala takes on as her subject herself, the life she may have or may have wished to live.

A deeply moving novel about a woman who thought she never wanted to be a mother—and the many ways that life can surprise us “An ode to possibility” — The Washington Post Rose Napolitano is fighting with her husband, Luke, about prenatal vitamins. She promised she'd take them, but didn't. He promised before they got married that he'd never want children, but now he's changed his mind. Their marriage has come to rest on this one question: Can Rose find it in herself to become a mother? Rose is a successful professor and academic. She's never wanted to have a child. The fight ends, and with it their marriage. But then, Rose has a fight with Luke about the vitamins--again. This time the fight goes slightly differently, and so does Rose's future as she grapples with whether she can indeed give up the one thing she thought she knew about herself. Can she reimagine her life in a completely new way? That reimagining plays out again and again in each of Rose's nine lives, just as it does for each of us as we grow into adulthood. What are the consequences of our biggest choices? How would life change if we let go of our preconceived ideas of ourselves and became someone completely new? Rose Napolitano's experience of choosing and then choosing again shows us in an utterly compelling way what it means, literally, to reinvent a life and, sometimes, become a different kind of woman than we ever imagined. A stunning novel about love, loss, betrayal, divorce, death, a woman's career and her identity, The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano is about finding one's way into a future that wasn't the future one planned, and the ways that fate intercedes when we least expect it.

Over the years of my life I have realized the aspects of my lifethe drug abuse, being molested, domestic violence, and rape. Each situation had to be addressed by me writing my thoughts. I started out as a diary and after a while, when it was healthy for my soul, by me writing my thoughts on what happened to me, on the things people did to me, and on how they treated me. My writing relieves some of the stress and pain. I look back on my life and as I write. I relive it over and over again. I recreated it all over the foibles of others as time went on, so I could forgive by telling my secrets and my story. Some of my most deeply hidden thoughts were pushed back to the back of my mind for years so that I could deal with it at a later time; I just went on living my life until I was able to deal with it years later. I was so ashamed to tell anyone. I was embarrassed. By writing every day, trying to work out my past events and in the conflicts, writing is a way to cleanse my soul. It is and can be an effective method of treatment emotionally and physically. Forgiving myself and others took a long time as far as the domestic violence in my life. I still live in fear every day not knowing if the man was or is ever caught. All the names have been changed to maintain their privacy. I pray my story may help and reach someone who may be in trouble and who needs to reach out. You dont have to be silent anymore. Find someone you can trust and tell them what is going on with you. There is help today.

My Nine Lives is a powerful and stirring memoir of one of the greatest pianists of the postwar era—an inspiring tale of courage, compassion, and triumph over outstanding odds. At the peak of his career, celebrated pianist Leon Fleisher suddenly lost the use of two fingers on his right hand. Miraculously, at the age of sixty-six, he was diagnosed with focal dystonia, and learned to manage it through a combination of physical therapy and experimental Botox injections. In 2003 Fleisher returned to Carnegie Hall to give his first two-handed performance in over three decades and brought down the house. With his coauthor, celebrated music critic Anne Midgette, Fleisher reveals here for the first time the depression that threatened to engulf him as his condition worsened, and the sheer love of music that rescued him from complete self-destruction.
