A Few Good Memories (HB) By: Soumen N. Ghosh Soumen N. Ghosh is a professor of Economics and has been practicing the craft over thirty four years. Dr. Ghosh traveled extensively and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and presented his research findings in international conferences all over the world. He is a product of Calcutta University and the Indian Statistical Institute. In his twenties he left India, first with a job at the United Nations with his newly-wed wife and then joined the Ph.D. program in Economics at a friendly place yet severe cold weather in Logan Utah (Utah State University). In his spare time he likes to listen to music (both Indian and Western Classical) and write stories, both fiction and non-fiction. A Few Good Memories is a collection of short stories, mostly non-fiction that reflect his and his family’s journey through time which are treasured jewels in his mind’s eyes. The first three stories have a common thread: relation between a father and his son(s). All the events are real and at times only embellished a little to portray a different side of Dr. Ghosh. The book is solely dedicated to his parents and to his two sons and wife. This book could not have been completed without unflinching support from his wife, Dr. Sumita-Chakraborti-Ghosh.

Fade to Gray By: Richard Masinton My wife, Dana, was stricken with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at the horrifyingly young age of 55. Fade to Gray is our story about dealing with the only disease for which modern medicine has no means to prevent, cure or slow its progression. Shock, disbelief and overwhelming emotions followed her diagnosis with a disease we thought only happened to the very elderly. Furthermore, I was appalled to discover that the business of Alzheimer’s care is broken. Caring and competent caregivers are hard to find, and assisted care facilities and other health care institutions that pride themselves on caring and competence are often anything but caring and competent. I refused to accept “business as usual” in confronting and dealing with this terrible illness, so Fade to Gray was written to share my challenging experiences and offer hard-earned lessons learned during Dana’s struggle. With no chance to alter the outcome, my purpose is to offer practical help, comforting wisdom and enduring hope to those whose lives are ruined by Alzheimer’s, hoping to alter what may otherwise seem a hopeless experience. This is not a story about how to COPE with Alzheimer’s. Fade to Gray was written to help others DEAL with and MANAGE a disease that is becoming a public health epidemic and an ineffective support infrastructure that annually costs families more than sending a child to Harvard!

Learning and Memory is based on an in-depth filmed conversation between Howard Burton and Alcino Silva, Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology, Psychiatry and Psychology at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Director of the Integrated Center for Learning and Memory at UCLA. Alcino Silva runs a learning and memory lab at UCLA that is focused on a vast number of topics, from schizophrenia and autism to learning and memory. This fascinating conversation explores how he and his colleagues focus on understanding the specific molecular mechanisms of neurobiology with the goal of being able to intervene and repair these mechanisms when they go awry. Further topics include plasticity of the brain, implanting memories, how cognitive deficits associated with developmental disorders can be reversed, the importance of “research maps” for the field and inspired optimism for the future. This carefully-edited book includes an introduction, Dom Alcino and the Age of Discoveries, and questions for discussion at the end of each chapter: I. Planting Seeds II. E Pluribus Unum III. Putting the Pieces Together IV. A Leg To Stand On V. Justified Confidence VI. Smart Mice VII. Manipulating Memories VIII. Individual Differences IX. Treating Cognitive Disorders X. Justified Optimism XI. Managing Discovery About Ideas Roadshow Conversations Series: This book is part of an expanding series of 100+ Ideas Roadshow conversations, each one presenting a wealth of candid insights from a leading expert through a focused yet informal setting to give non-specialists a uniquely accessible window into frontline research and scholarship that wouldn't otherwise be encountered through standard lectures and textbooks. In this delightfully witty, provocative book, literature professor and psychoanalyst Pierre Bayard argues that not having read a book need not be an impediment to having an interesting conversation about it. (In fact, he says, in certain situations reading the book is the worst thing you could do.) Using examples from such writers as Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Montaigne, and Umberto Eco, he describes the varieties of "non-reading"-from books that you've never heard of to books that you've read and forgotten-and offers advice on how to turn a sticky social situation into an occasion for creative brilliance. Practical, funny, and thought-provoking, How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read-which became a favorite of readers everywhere in the hardcover edition-is in the end a love letter to books, offering a whole new perspective on how we read and absorb them.

This book jumps from present to past in my moments of PTSD when I relive the events that make these entries. The entire time from when I was six years old to when I am thirty years old in 2020 forms the complete book you now hold in your hand. Through the journey you take with me, my past is slowly disclosed in sections via chapters. I have a chapter for each phase of my life I was struggling with, such as depression, PTSD, abuse, and the major one for me--my miscarriage and death of my son, which is what birthed this book. This book was designed to be in the form of a journal instead of a communication between two people so that you could take this journey with me in these different areas of my life and because these journal entries were my therapy and way to survive. Through my journal entries in this autobiography, you can feel the raw emotion with me in the moment. You will feel the thoughts as they dripped with reality. I was very much a part of each chapter, disclosing the very real struggle in which I was thrown. Slowly the entire picture is painted before you. With every step you take into my journey, you become one step closer to understanding what life was like for me. This isn't your typical autobiography where someone sits and tells you about their life. In this autobiography, you get the chance to live it with me and all the people that it includes and all the experiences it conveys. You travel in my footsteps through my memories of the life I have lived and currently live. You read the experiences that have shaped the person who stands here today. This wasn't an easy road for me, and it has taken much courage to display these very authentic and real pages from my actual journal during this time. My aim is to have this help someone see the positive in life and be an encouragement in rough times in the wisdom I disclose from these experiences in my life. However, it is mostly for myself to say--I am still here to give a voice to the little girl who has been trapped inside for thirty years and to show the many ways that I am still fighting this fight. It is to give a voice to my son and the reality of miscarriage many do not see and those who do live with it on a daily basis. This is to give a voice to the all the struggles this covers and to the one struggling and to break the silence. Are you ready to come? Are you to come on this journey with me?

This book sets the agenda to turn behavioral economics, which has long been considered a subordinate discipline, into mainstream economics. Ghisellini and Chang expose the conceptual and empirical inadequacy of conventional economics using illustrations of real world decision-making in a dynamic environment, including evidence from the global financial crisis. With a rigorous yet accessible style, they give a comprehensive overview of behavioral economics and of the current state of play in the field across different schools of thought. Seven major conceptual problems still affecting the development of behavioral economics are identified and the authors propose research avenues to address these issues and allow the discipline to receive its long-awaited recognition. Crucial reading for researchers and students looking for insights into the many unsolved problems of economics.
