Much, however, as they possess to instruct the Artist, amuse and gratify the man of taste, and give emulation to rival genius; it is trifling, compared with those mighty and appalling events, which for thirty years have astonished and convulsed the world, and of which they are at once a proud monument, and a degrading record. The series commence with the Battle of Montenotte, the first victory gained Gy Bonaparte after his appointment to the command of the army of Italy, in 1796; and is followed by others, commemorating events and important battles in which the French were successful, up to 1813.
