History revisionists have long insisted that the true cause of the War Between the States was the allegedly immoral system of Southern slavery. To the contrary, Dr. Dabney shows from Scripture that slavery, as practiced in the South, was not inherently wicked, as claimed by the Northern Abolitionists, but was recognized and regulated by God's Word, and that, while the wealth of New England was initially built almost exclusively from the "iniquitous traffick" of the African slave trade, the South, and Virginia in particular, was merely the unwilling recipients of the hapless Negroes who were landed on her shores in violation of first Colonial, then State law. This book will challenge everything you thought you knew about antebellum slavery.

Originally published in 1867, 'A Defence of Virginia' is a passionate defense of the Confederacy and its values. Written by Robert L. Dabney, a Confederate soldier and theologian, the book argues that the South was fighting for its constitutional rights and its way of life. While some may find its arguments outdated or offensive, 'A Defence of Virginia' remains an important historical document and a window into the mindset of the Confederate era. Exposes the reader to the thinking of the south in its defense of slavery and why they were fighting against the north. Dabney reveals his racism pretty explicitly while also trying to say that southern slavery was different from Roman chattel slavery. they owned the slave's labor not their person. But the book does open your eyes to the wide spread nature of the slave trade, the way people can use scripture to defend wrong thinking, and the laws of Virginia concerning slavery.

Excerpt from A Defence of Virginia, (and Through Her, of the South): In Recent and Pending Contests Against the Sectional Party It should be added, in explanation, that, as a son Of Virginia, I have naturally taken her, the Oldest and greatest Of the slaveholding States, as a representative. I was most familiar with her laws. In defending her, I have virtually defended the whole South, Of which she was the type; for the differences between her slave institutions and theirs were in no respect essential.
