Excerpt from A Book of Manx Poetry This compilation of verse relating- to the isle of Mann is, for the most part, the work of writers Manx by birth or by descent. The intention was to bring together in small compass some of the best specimens of native poetry, many of them long buried in out-of-print volumes and old periodicals. It originated in a desire to awaken in the young people of this country a deeper interest in the land of their birth by an acquaintance with the poetic writings of their kinsmen; a tributary stream which later may bear them out upon the broad waters of English poetry; and it was further hoped that the book might become a factor in the present revival of the Manx national spirit initiated by the late A. W. Moore, sometime Speaker of the House of Keys, and by the genius of Thomas Edward Brown. One of the aims of this patriotic movement, now being carried on by a small but enthusiastic group of workers and writers, is the preservation of the language, examples of which are given in this volume. And here I would appeal to my fellow-countrymen and women not to let die the speech of innumerable generations of our fore-fathers. Excerpt from The Manx Witch: And Other Poems First comes Tom Baynes among these sorted quills, In asynartete octosyllables. Methinks you see the "fo'c's'le" squat, the squirt Nicotian, various interval of shirt, Enlarged, contract - keen swordsman, cut-and-thrust: Old salt, old rip, old friend, Tom Baynes comes fust. Succeeds our Curate, innocent and good, The growth of Oxford in her sanest mood; Dame Natures child, though bred among the Stoics, And, if he gush, he gushes in heroics. Forgive the youth if sometimes he relax In extra gush of pseudo-dochmiacs. Last hear our Pazon, reverend and meek; In unadorned verse I make him speak. As is most fit. To him Tom Baynes' rude style Were "simply barbarous" - I see him smile His smile - "Poor Tom has thoughts beyond his station, But language! sir - unfit for publication." The Curates rhymes he haply thinks audacious, Emphatic, overwrought. "But 'twere ungracious Of me to criticise a gentleman That is so kind and clever." There again You have our Pazon. So he says his say, And all my dreams of Manxland fade away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manx Song and Maiden Song The Editor and Publisher of this definitive series of contemporary verse hope that by judicious and sympathetic selection of the volumes the confidence of the discriminating public interested in new poetry will be gained, that each little volume of authentic promise or distinctive achievement will be found to contain some thing really notable and precious, in the best sense of the term that without recourse to meretricious methods or grotesque tricks or atulent pretensions they will prove that new verse as well as more utilitarian books can be published successfully at a low price. We believe that, exploited though it has been by notoriety-seekers and experiment-mongers and made cautious by immature offerings, there is a wide if scattered public eager to welcome and appreciate the fine work of this generation, - a body of readers more responsive now than at any previous time to the spirit of poetry. Excerpt from Thomas Edward Brown, the Manx Poet: An Appreciation A full and final appreciation of T. E. Brown as a poet has, in my judgment, still to be written; but I cordially welcome the essay of my young friend, to which he has asked me to prefix a few words of introduction. His essay is genuine and dis cerning, and I welcome it all the more because he had not, as I had, the immense privilege and pleasure of knowing Brown personally. He belongs to a later generation; he therefore in some degree anticipates the judgment of posterity. Brown's contemporaries have inadequately, as it seems to me, recognized his claims to be among the fixed stars of literature, and Mr. Selwyn Simpson's essay will do something to create in the next generation a wider and more serious study of Brown as a poet.
