An ex-cop-turned-private-investigator becomes too involved with her work when her new lover turns out to be a murder suspect. A “bitch called hope” is the poker term for drawing the queen-eight in Texas Hold’em. There’s not enough luck in the world to build a winning hand with those cards, but it’s so tempting to try. As a smart poker player, Lennox Cooper knows this. But as a detective, Lennox has issues. A year ago, her affair with a married cop got her fired from the Portland Police. Now she’s trying to build a new life as a private investigator, but all she’s landed so far are surveillance gigs. The murder of a wealthy developer gives her a chance to reestablish herself as a homicide detective. During the course of the investigation she meets Mr. Right. Only problem, he’s on the short list of suspects. Lennox bets on her lover’s innocence, but the odds aren’t much better than drawing a bitch called hope… “A well-crafted mystery novel with a heroine you can root for, plenty of action and a satisfying ending.”―Phillip Margolin, New York Times–bestselling author of Capitol Murder “A noir with heart…Beware, it's hard to put down.”―Cara Black, New York Times–bestselling author of the Aimee Leduc mysteries “Gardner deftly balances the detailed intricacy of the police procedural with a richly nuanced tale of betrayed love, family conflict, and murder. Told with a crisp voice and sharp pacing, the story of private investigator Lennox Cooper packs a wallop from the opening scene.”―Bill Cameron, author of the Spotted Owl Award–winning Country Line

How far would you go to change your life? In the small American town of Hope, teenager Lucas Caldwell dreams of escaping his life. His mother, Liss, is struggling with addiction, and his sickly little brother, Reuben, would never survive her without him. His grandfather, Lucky, is dying in a care facility, his mind fading. But in a final moment of clarity, he lets slip to Lucas that he is in possession of a painting worth millions, stolen from a transport convoy in a daring heist five decades ago. As the disbelief fades, a thin hope begins to grow. But secrets as big as this rarely stay hidden for long, and as the corruption of money spreads, so does the threat of violence and bloodshed. And with hungry wolves circling the payday to end all paydays, the fallout could tear the town, and Lucas’s family, apart. Lucas would do anything to protect the people he loves. But at what cost? A gut-wrenching, utterly compelling small-town crime thriller, laying bare the corrosive nature of greed and the trials and dangers of those living on the fringes of society.

Rhetoric and feminism have yet to coalesce into a singular recognizable field. In this book, author Cheryl Glenn advances the feminist rhetorical project by introducing a new theory of rhetorical feminism. Clarifying how feminist rhetorical practices have given rise to this innovative approach, Rhetorical Feminism and This Thing Called Hope equips the field with tools for a more expansive and productive dialogue. Glenn’s rhetorical feminism offers an alternative to hegemonic rhetorical histories, theories, and practices articulated in Western culture. This alternative theory engages, addresses, and supports feminist rhetorical practices that include openness, authentic dialogue and deliberation, interrogation of the status quo, collaboration, respect, and progress. Rhetorical feminists establish greater representation and inclusivity of everyday rhetors, disidentification with traditional rhetorical practices, and greater appreciation for alternative means of delivery, including silence and listening. These tenets are supported by a cogent reconceptualization of the traditional rhetorical appeals, situating logos alongside dialogue and understanding, ethos alongside experience, and pathos alongside valued emotion. Threaded throughout the book are discussions of the key features of rhetorical feminism that can be used to negotiate cross-boundary mis/understandings, inform rhetorical theories, advance feminist rhetorical research methods and methodologies, and energize feminist practices within the university. Glenn discusses the power of rhetorical feminism when applied in classrooms, the specific ways it inspires and sustains mentoring, and the ways it supports administrators, especially directors of writing programs. Thus, the innovative theory of rhetorical feminism—a theory rich with tactics and potentially broad applications—opens up a new field of research, theory, and practice at the intersection of rhetoric and feminism.

A lovelorn, Portland P.I. must prove a man’s innocence when no one else will in this murder mystery from the author of Betting Blind. Lennox Cooper, flinty ex-cop and poker playing private detective, stands alone in championing Tomek Jagoda, darling son of a local crime family, accused of murdering his high-living girlfriend. The cops have proof that will send Tomek to prison for life. Meanwhile, prosecuting the case is a Viking goddess of a woman, as smart as she is stunning, who draws everyone's adoration. Next to her, Lennox feels like a garden gnome. It doesn’t help that August Kline, Lennox’s boss and Tomek’s defense attorney, is ready to throw his client under the bus in a plea deal that carries a ten-year sentence just to date the prosecutor. As Lennox untangles all the lies surrounding the case, she sees deeper into Tomek’s humanity and into her own. She realizes that she’s in love with Kline, who’s in lust with the prosecutor. Now, if Lennox hopes to truly save an innocent man, she must wager her job, her love, and her own safety to find the killer… “Readers will look forward to seeing more of the feisty and resourceful Lennox.”—Publishers Weekly

With no fewer than nine members and a unique stage image based on grotesque masks and boiler suits, Slipknot retained a mystique that was unprecedented in the metal world, never allowing their faces to become known – so that the focus would remain on their music. The first edition of this book published in 2001 followed the band from their inception in Des Moines, Iowa in the mid-1990s through to the release of their second album: an updated edition followed in 2003. It’s now a decade since the first volume appeared, and in that time Slipknot have evolved into a completely different band from the one that first emerged into the limelight in 1999. Everyone knows their faces now. The band’s music is darker, deeper and more adult after four studio albums, three DVDs and a live release. Most strikingly, the sudden death of their bass player Paul Gray in 2010 has changed the face and the attitude of the group, although their commercial profile is, if anything, greater than it was before. Slipknot: All Hope Is Gone explores this unlikely and tragic evolution, with new chapters covering the band’s career to date – and it also asks what their future will be.

Until— The truth about a deal with hell is revealed. I have to choose between the ultimate sacrifice or losing jerk-face forever. One will live, one will die. Who, solely depends on my selfishness.

When I promised no more mistakes, I’d meant it. Yet here I was, staring down at a pink plus sign, with my heart in my throat, future on hold, and the fuzzy memory of the delicious lips of a much younger man on mine. No way could things could get any worse. Or so I thought. Until Caleb Anderson asked me out on a date. He was the most sincere, fun-loving, and ridiculously attractive man I’d ever met. Seven years my junior, my best friend’s cousin, and six years cancer-free, he was living his best damn life. And he wanted me to be part of it. Too bad I was pregnant with another man’s baby. Still, he pursued me. Wooed me. Wowed me in every way possible. Despite our age difference, our battle scars, and my habit of making the worst damn choices, he tried to convince me that love was real. To give me hope for a new kind of future. Somehow, he succeeded. But if the mistakes of my past taught me anything, it’s that feelings of hope can’t be trusted. Unless maybe Caleb is right. Maybe fairy tales can be real.
