Black holes exist in galactic nuclei and in some X-ray binaries found in our own galaxy and the large Magellanic Cloud. This volume focuses on astrophysical high-energy emission processes around black holes, and the development of theoretical frameworks for interesting observational results.

A series of new and relevant experimental results are here presented to the community for the first time. In particular, we refer to the measurement of the neutron spin structure functions by the SLAC (E142) and CERN (SMC) collaborations; the first results from MAMI on experiments with tagged photons (A1 collaboration), on electroproduction of multi-hadron final states (A2 collaboration) and the neutron form factor (A3 collaboration); the experiments on strangeness photoproduction at ELSA; the polarization experiments at Bates on the neutron form factor and nuclear response functions and the photon and electron scattering data obtained by the Genova-Frascati Jet Target collaboration.Focused on the study of spin observables and exclusive processes at high momenta, the following sessions were held: The Neutron Form Factors; Spin Structure Functions; Exclusive Processes at High υ and Q2. Deep Inelastic Scattering; Spin Observables; One- and Two-Nucleon Knockout at Low and Intermediate Energies; Excitation of Baryons Resonances and Strangeness.

This book focuses on the latest theoretical and experimental results and future perspectives regarding electromagnetic and hadronic physics at intermediate energies. Nucleon form factors and spin structure functions, deep-inelastic scattering, excited baryons and mesons, and correlations in nuclei are discussed. Many new results and the scientific programmes of the different laboratories in Europe and North America are also presented. A special section is devoted to relativistic approaches to hadrons and nuclei at intermediate energies.

This volume contains papers from the lectures and seminars given at the School. The lectures centered around a review and discussion of the most significant results obtained to date through the study of nuclear structure with electromagnetic and other high energy probes. Seminars of a more specialized nature were devoted to a discussion of recent results obtained in several research centers.

In recent years there has been growing interest in the nucleon-nucleon correl ations inside nuclei. In many respects the motions of the nucleons can be very well described by an overall mean field, so that the motion of each nucleon is governed by the mean field due to all the other nucleons. This concept underlies the Fermi-gas, Hartree-Fock and shell models and has enabled a range of nuclear properties to be calculated, often to surprising accuracy. It gradually became clear, however, that these mean-field models are limited by the effects due to the very strong interactions between the nucleons that occur at short distances; these are the short-range correlations. They are responsible for instance for the high-momentum components in the nucleon momentum dis tribution, and prevent the simultaneous description of the nuclear density and momentum distributions by the same mean field. It thus becomes necessary to develop methods for including the effects of nucleon correlations in nuclei, and these are the main subject of this book. Some related problems of nuclear structure were discussed in an earlier book by the same authors: Nucleon Momentum and Density Distributions in Nuclei (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1988). The main aim of that book was to study the effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations, both short-range and tensor, on the nucleon momentum distribution, which is particularly sensitive to these correl ations, and on the nucleon density distribution.

This book summarizes the considerable progress recently achieved in the understanding of nucleon and nuclear structure by using high energy electrons as a probe. A collection of papers discusses in detail the new frontiers of this field. Experimental and theoretical articles cover topics such as the structure of the nucleon, nucleon distributions, many-body correlations, non-nucleonic degrees of freedom and few-body systems. This book is an up-to-date introduction to the research planned with continuous beam electron accelerators.

The Symposium "Symmetries in Science VII: Spectrum Generating Algebras and Dynamic Symmetries in Physics" was held at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in Niigata, Japan Campus, during the period August 28-31, 1992. The Symposium was held in honor of Professor Francesco lachello on the occasion of his 50th birthday. We wish to thank the colleagues and friends of Franco for their participation in the Symposium as well as for contributing articles to this volume honoring him. It was their commitment and involvement which made this Symposium a success. We also wish to thank Dr. Jared H. Dorn, the director of SIUC-N, for his support in the planning and the execution of the Symposium. Moreover we wish to thank Mayor Nobuo Kumakura of Nakajo town and Mr. Kaichi Suzuki of the school entity "The Pacific" for their friendly support. Bruno Gruber, SIUC-N Takaharu Otsuka, University of Tokyo v LAUDATIO ON THE OCCASION OF THE 50TH BIRTHDAY OF PROFESSOR FRANCESCO IACHELLO I first met Franco lachello in 1974. Driving a smart Alfa-Romeo, he came to meet me at the station at Groningen where I was to spend a summer conducting research.
