Excerpt from 1861-1865 Incidents of the Civil War During the Four Years of Its Progress The government made no effort to check the warlike proceedings throughout the South, and as the term of service of President Buchanan drew to a close, much anxiety was felt about the inauguration of Mr. Lincoln. Happily, this took place without violent demonstrations. Meanwhile the Rebels had been busy with their preparations, and the batteries in Charleston harbor being in readiness, they opened fire on Fort Sumter, April 12th, at 4 o'clock in the morning. How the news of this attack, and the events that followed, were received throughout the country, the feelings and sentiments of different people during the succeeding months and years, are best told by clippings from the newspapers, as they were issued just at the time the episodes were passing. Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865 Although many histories have been written and tradition has furnished its part toward the perpetuation of the memory of the exciting times of the civil war, very much occurred that has never been recorded. Monuments may be erected and histories written, but unless the veterans now living get busy and refresh their memories, and the memories of their comrades very much that happened, and ought to be preserved in durable form will with the passing of the main actors pass into oblivion. The Confederate Soldiers now living are all old men, and each one could, and ought to contribute items of information that would be interesting to the children and adults of future generations. These scenes, anecdotes, incidents and historical facts ought to be written by the soldiers themselves, for by no other means can a correct history of the war period be handed down to posterity. Excerpt from Incidents of the Civil War in America The Joan of Arc of Camp Dick Robinson. - A young lady who has been with the East Tennesseeans during their stay at Camp Dick Robinson, is thus alluded to by the camp correspondent of the Cincinnati Times: "One of the features of the 1st Tennessee Regiment is .the person of a brave and accomplished young lady of but eighteen summers, and of prepossessing appearance, named Sarah Taylor, of East Tennessee, who is the step-daughter of Captain Dowden, of the 1st Tennessee Regiment. Miss Taylor is an exile from her home, having joined the fortunes of her step-father and her wandering companions, accompanying them in their perilous and dreary flight from their homes and estates. Miss Taylor has formed the determination to share with her late companions the dangers and fatigues of a military campaign. She has donned a neat blue chapeau, beneath which her long hair is fantastically arranged; bearing at her side a highly-finished regulation sword, and silver-mounted pistols in her belt, all of which gives her a very neat appearance. She is quite the idol of the Tennessee boys. They look upon her as a second Joan of Arc, believing that victory and glory will perch upon the standards borne in the ranks favored by her loved presence. Miss Captain Taylor is all courage and skill. Having become an adept in the sword exercise, and a sure shot with the pistol, she is determined to lead in the van of the march bearing her exiled and oppressed countrymen back to their homes, or, if failing, to offer up her own life's blood in the sacrifice." A gentleman who was on the ground on Saturday night, the 19th instant, when the order was issued to the Tennesseeans to march to reinforce Colonel Garrard, informs us that the wildest excitement pervaded the whole camp, and that the young lady above alluded to mounted her horse, and. cap in hand, galloped along the line like a spirit of flame, cheering on the men. She wore a blue blouse, and was armed with pistols, sword, and rifle. Our informant, who has been at the camp the whole time since the arrival of the Tennesseeans, says that Miss Taylor is regarded by the troops as a guardian angel, who is to lead them to victory. Excerpt from Memorandum and Anecdotes of the Civil War, 1862 to 1865 On father's return, accompanied by the doctor, I was presented to my father by Mrs. Osburn with the ejaculation, Nort, it's a boy! Well, there was considerable confusion and bustle for several minutes. I was weighed with the old-fashioned balance and broke the beam at eight pounds avoirdupois.
