Monroe Projects, 1800 Story Ave... Man, where can I even begin to describe my old building of more than 20 years? Hmm, how about a ghetto, low income, poverty stricken, housing complex, located in the Soundview section of The South Bronx in New York City. A place where the 43rd precinct is located almost across the street, yet there are still very high levels of crime in the immediate area! Under my building, you might've seen a few drug sales, shoot outs, a fight, a block party, children playing, etc, all of which, whether positive or negative, were a part of the daily life in the hood. If you're not from an environment such as this, you may not understand all of the dynamics that go into just trying to survive on a daily basis, but the reality is those of us that are from there now or came from there know what that story is like first hand.

This book provides a unique synthesis of ideas based on constructivist approaches to learning, including the importance of positive dispositions and learning communities, the nature of higher order thinking, and the relationship between methods such as guided inquiry in the sciences and balanced literacy.

Daniel is a young MĂŠtis man searching for a way to exist in a world of lateral violence, intergenerational trauma and systemic racism. Facing obstacles of his own at every turn, he observes and learns from the lived realities of his family members, friends, teachers and lovers. He finds hope in the inherent connection of Indigenous Peopls to the land, and the permanence of culture, language and ceremony in the face of displacement. Set in Edmonton, this story considers Indigenous youth in relation to the urban constructs and colonial spaces in which they surviveâfrom violence, whitewashing, trauma and racism to language revitalization, relationships with Elders, restaking land claims and ultimately, triumph. Based on Papaschase and MĂŠtis oral histories and lived experience, Conor Kerrâs debut novel will not soon be forgotten.

In this witty historical fiction middle grade novel set at the turn of the century, an 11-year-old girl explores the natural world, learns about science and animals, and grows up. A Newbery Honor Book. âThe most delightful historical novel for tweens in many, many years. . . . Callie's struggles to find a place in the world where she'll be encouraged in the gawky joys of intellectual curiosity are fresh, funny, and poignant today.â âThe New Yorker Calpurnia Virginia Tate is eleven years old in 1899 when she wonders why the yellow grasshoppers in her Texas backyard are so much bigger than the green ones. With a little help from her notoriously cantankerous grandfather, an avid naturalist, she figures out that the green grasshoppers are easier to see against the yellow grass, so they are eaten before they can get any larger. As Callie explores the natural world around her, she develops a close relationship with her grandfather, navigates the dangers of living with six brothers, and comes up against just what it means to be a girl at the turn of the century. Author Jacqueline Kelly deftly brings Callie and her family to life, capturing a year of growing up with unique sensitivity and a wry wit. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly was a 2010 Newbery Honor Book and the winner of the 2010 Bank Street - Josette Frank Award. This title has Common Core connections. This is perfect for young readers who like historical fiction, STEM topics, animal stories, and feminist middle grade novels. Don't miss the sequel! Soon to be a Netflix series starring Octavia Spencer, On Her Own Ground is the first full-scale biography of âone of the great success stories of American historyâ (The Philadelphia Inquirer), Madam C.J. Walkerâthe legendary African American entrepreneur and philanthropistâby her great-great-granddaughter, AâLelia Bundles. The daughter of formerly enslaved parents, Sarah Breedloveâwho would become known as Madam C. J. Walkerâwas orphaned at seven, married at fourteen, and widowed at twenty. She spent the better part of the next two decades laboring as a washerwoman for $1.50 a week. Thenâwith the discovery of a revolutionary hair care formula for black womenâeverything changed. By her death in 1919, Walker managed to overcome astonishing odds: building a storied beauty empire from the ground up, amassing wealth unprecedented among black women, and devoting her life to philanthropy and social activism. Along the way, she formed friendships with great early-twentieth-century political figures such as Ida B. Wells, Mary McLeod Bethune, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Booker T. Washington.
