Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Syntactic Development, language: English, abstract: It is the goal of this paper to examine the acquisition of the future tense in children’s speech. After a two word utterance stage they develop more and more their speaking skills and start to talk about events and activities in the future, apart from saying things about the present. To give a detailed account of the acquisition of the future, this study includes several steps of examination. It will not only try to answer to the questions, when children first use future expressions and how their use develops in time. But it also includes an analysis of the occurrence of future tense in specific constructions, such as simple sentences, questions etc. It is also necessary to look at verbs as well as subjects which occur with expressions of future tense. A last part of the study is concerned with common errors children produce when speaking about the future. There exist several ways to express the future in adult grammar. The most common forms, which are also the focus of this analysis, are the simple future expressed by will and the going to-future. Other possibilities of expressing the future, e.g. using simple present tense or a present progressive form of the verb, will be neglected in this paper, as they are too complex in their concepts for children. They mainly depend on adverbials of time to denote the future and therefore would require a different focus of analysis. The simple future is formed with the modal auxiliary will, followed by the infinitive of a verb (e.g. Greenbaum 1991: 54), as in (a) I will write the exam. The will-future is used to convey two different concepts: first, it is used for expressing general predictions and assumptions of what is going to happen in the future and second, it marks spontaneous decisions, offers and promises. (cf. Fleischhack 2001: 70). The second form of expressing future tense is the combination of the infinitive of a verb with a form of be going to, such as in (b) I am going to work in the garden.

Future Times, Future Tenses examines how the future is expressed by means of tense, aspect, and modality across a wide range of languages, among them French, Polish, Basque, Turkish, and West Greenlandic. From the present point of view, the future is not fixed: while there is arguably only one past, the future is largely open and/or indeterminate. Reference to the future has thus become one of the most hotly-debated topics in contemporary linguistics: the interactions of future tense with future time, and of future tense with the semantics of possible worlds, are crucial to any satisfactory account of temporal linguistics. This book considers and seeks a resolution to outstanding issues in the field by uniting linguistic and philosophical perspectives on future reference in natural language. Scholars from different parts of the world approach these issues from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including those of linguistic typology, formal semantics, pragmatics, and philosophy of language. In the process they question the very validity of the traditional notion of a specific marker for future tense. The book shows the close connections between linguistic, logical, metaphysical, ontological, and epistemological issues concerning the future and reveals the value of linking linguistic considerations of tense and aspect to philosophical approaches to modality and time.

The most troublesome words and phrases—as well as grammatical terms—are listed alphabetically within 18 subject areas to enable the reader to check quickly on questions of usage. In each case, illustrative examples are given, and the guiding principle is stated for the reader to follow in avoiding the mistake and others similar to it. An extensive index for additional ease of reference helps make this book a handy tool for the modern reader who realizes that mere knowledge is no longer sufficient—that one must be able to express his knowledge clearly, forcefully, and correctly.

Studies in African Linguistic Typology

The twenty-one papers that make up this volume reflect the broad perspective of African linguistic typology studies today. Where previous volumes would present language material from a very restricted area and perspective, the present contributions reflect the global interest and orientation of current African linguistic studies. The studies are nearly all implicational in nature. Based upon a detailed survey of a particular linguistic phenomenon in a given language or language area conclusions are drawn about the general nature about this phenomenon in the languages of Africa and beyond. They represent as such a first step that may ultimately lead to a more thorough understanding of African linguistic structures. This approach is well justified. Taking the other road, attempting to pick out linguistic details from often fairly superficially documented languages runs the risk that the data and its implications for the structure investigated might be misunderstood. Consequentially only very few studies of this nature giving the very broad perspective, the overview of a particular structure type covering the whole African continent are represented here.
