Excerpt from Gleanings in Missouri History, Vol. 1 The writer has been impressed. Too, with the fact that comparatively few residents of Missouri have'even a cur sory knowledge of the history of our commonwealth. Yet no State in the Mississippi Valley presents a story of more ln tense interest. Until recently, no history oi our State was ever seen in even the best of our. Schools. As works of reference, only one or two could be had. And even now there are upon the market only three works pertaining directly to the history of our great State. These facts prompted the writer to publish a series of newspaper articles upon the subject, which are reproduced (with some revision) in this little volume. In writing these chapters, two things - in addition to the general trend of the story - have been kept constantly in view: (i) to enrich the pages with such anecdotes and local incidents as came to the notice of the author; and (2) to present as completely as circumstances permitted, pict ures of iife in the territory during the several periods. The most of the incidents related are authentic, but a few rest upon newspaper articles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
