Excerpt from Makers of North Carolina History The title of this book sufficiently explains its purpose and its scope. In it I have emphasized, as far as possible, the personalities of the men who have made our history rather than the events in which they were concerned. The latter can be studied in the narrative histories of the State which of necessity must present but little or nothing of the former. Of course I do not mean that the great events in which these men were leaders have been neglected. The child who studies this book will acquire as much knowledge of the general history of the State as the average child in the grades is capable of assimilating. This book has been written under the impression that the children of North Carolina have more knowledge of the great events of our history than of the great leaders; and under the conviction that knowledge of the latter is equally as important and even more interesting, to children, at least, than the former. I am, of course, aware that others selecting such a list would probably reject some names that I have included and include some that I have excluded. I have no quarrel with their choice and I trust they will have none with mine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of North Carolina, Vol. 1: With Maps and IllustrationsIn entering upon his work, the writer avails himself of the opportunity briefly to explain his proposed plan, as in some of its features, it departs from established historical models. A mere chronologically accurate narrative of important public events does not in his view constitute history; though of it, such a narrative properly forms a part. He has supposed that the real history of a State is to be read in the gradual progress of its peo ple in intelligence, refinement, industry, wealth, taste, civilization, &c. The public events that transpire are but the exponents of the condition of the inhabitants, in these and other particulars.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the North Carolina, Vol. 2: From the Earliest Discoveries to the Present Time In the year of our Lord 1825, some notable events occurred in the history of the State. The village of Murfreesboro had greatly extended its limits and many worthy men had been added to the catalogue of its citizens. On February 25th, the village was thrown into a fever of excitement over the fact that Gilbert Mo tier, Marquis de La Fayette, was in Suffolk on his way to visit the town. He was no ordinary guest. A half century before, he had left his young wife and the splendors of court life in Paris, and had shed his blood in behalf of the struggling colonies. He had been a great and blameless actor since that time, in the French Revolution. He had landed in New York, August 15th of the previous year. He had uncovered his gray hairs at. The tomb of his dead friend at Mount Vernon. He had been with the retired sage at Monticello, and, as guest of the nation, was visiting each of the States. Excerpt from Sketches From the Biographical History of North Carolina Upon his mother's death, when he was three years old, he was cared for by an aunt, Mrs. Robertson Jackson, of Pasquotank County, who with her husband reared him as their own child. He was required to work on the farm, and was well grounded in habits of industry, economy and sobriety. He pays this high tribute to the faithfulness and affection of these foster parents: I knew no other home. I became to them as a son. They were most surely all that parents could have been. God never made a nobler man than Robertson Jackson, quiet, peace able, unambitious, unassuming; uneducated, but withal one of.
