Ages ago, when the world was young, people did not know as much of nature and its secrets as we do now. Moreover, they did not have the art of writing, or if known to them, it was used only by a few, and its value for handing down the facts of history was not clearly understood. Thus, two great fields of knowledge, the world of nature and the world of history, were known only in a dim and vague way. Yet men and women were even then anxious to find out the causes of what they saw about them in nature, as well as to know whence and how they came to their native lands, through what journeys and labors, who were their ancient leaders in war, the builders of their cities, the founders of their laws and customs, and the like. In this book, the editor tells us of Beowulf, Rip van Winkle, Odysseus, the Argonauts, King Arthur and many tales more.

The domestic theme has a tremendous anthropological, literary and cultural significance. The purpose of this book is to analyse and interpret the most important realisations and tendencies of this thematic complex in the history of Russian literature. It is the first systematic book-length exploration of the meaning and development of the House theme in Russian literature of the past 200 years. It studies the ideological, psychological and moral meanings which Russian cultural and literary tradition have invested in the house or projected on it in literary texts. Central to this study’s approach is the concept of the House Myth, consisting of a set of basic fabular elements and a set of general types of House images. This House Myth provides the general point of reference from which the literary works were analyzed and compared. With the help of this analytical procedure characteristics of individual authors could be described as well as recurrent patterns and features discerned in the way Russian literature dealt with the House and its thematics, thus reflecting characteristics of Russian literary world pictures, Russian mentalities and Russian attitudes towards life. This book is of interest for students of Russian literature as well as for those interested in the House as a cultural and literary topic, in the semiotics of literature, and in relations between culture, anthropology and literature.

However, the king is attracted to Maritana and lures her to a hunting lodge, where Don César, who escapes jail, arrives in time to save her from his advances. Tumbleweeds are stories of mostly ordinary or normal people placed in or finding themselves involved in freakish or bizarre circumstances. They are, we believe interesting and unusual stories worth reading. Tumbleweeds are cleanly written with little or no profanity despite some violent incidences described therein. It is our belief that all of us are like tumbleweeds in that we too are subjected to the winds that scatter the tumbleweeds in all directions. Just remember that once that bond of birth is broken, the winds of destiny start blowing and never cease throughout our entire lives.
