All My Springs: Journey of a Lifetime In All My Springs: Journey of a Lifetime, author Carol L. Evans invites readers to share a life (her life)that like spring itselfis constantly being renewed and reborn. This lovely and lively collection of personal essays, short stories and poems will quickly compel readers to find a comfortable chair and quiet time to savor the newness of Evans writing. The writing is mature, but not stale. It is skilled, yet extremely poetic. Her short story, The Little House in the Cul de Sac, is a beautiful, yet disturbing tale of mental illness. In it, the narrator deftly unfolds a poignant modern-day tale of a deeply troubled mind wresting with reality and normalcy. By Jennifer D. Nearly 50 years after his death, Louis Armstrong remains one of the 20th century's most iconic figures. Popular fans still appreciate his later hits such as "Hello, Dolly!" and "What a Wonderful World," while in the jazz community, he remains venerated for his groundbreaking innovations in the 1920s. The achievements of Armstrong's middle years, however, possess some of the trumpeter's most scintillating and career-defining stories. But the story of this crucial time has never been told in depth — until now. Between 1929 and 1947, Armstrong transformed himself from a little-known trumpeter in Chicago to an internationally renowned pop star, setting in motion the innovations of the Swing Era and Bebop. He had a similar effect on the art of American pop singing, waxing some of his most identifiable hits such as "Jeepers Creepers" and "When You're Smiling." However as author Ricky Riccardi shows, this transformative era wasn't without its problems, from racist performance reviews and being held up at gunpoint by gangsters to struggling with an overworked embouchure and getting arrested for marijuana possession. Utilizing a prodigious amount of new research, Riccardi traces Armstrong's mid-career fall from grace and dramatic resurgence. Featuring never-before-published photographs and stories culled from Armstrong's personal archives, Heart Full of Rhythm tells the story of how the man called "Pops" became the first "King of Pop."

One of the most popular and memorable American musicians of the 20th century, Nat King Cole (1919-65) is remembered today as both a pianist and a singer, a feat rarely accomplished in the world of popular music. Now, in this complete life and times biography, author Will Friedwald offers a new take on this fascinating musician, framing him first as a bandleader and then as a star. In Cole's early phase, Friedwald explains, his primary task of keeping his trio going was just as much of a focus for him as his own playing and singing, always a collective or group performance. In the second act, Cole's collaborators were more likely to be arranger-conductors like Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins, rather than his sidemen on bass and guitar. In the first act, his sidemen were equals, in the second phase, his collaborators were tasked exclusively with putting the focus on him, making him sound good, while being largely invisible themselves. Friedwald brings his full musical knowledge to bear in putting the man in the work, demonstrating how this duality appears over and over again in Cole's life and career: jazz vs. pop, solo vs. trio, piano vs. voice, wife number one (Nadine) vs. wife number two (Maria), the good songs vs. the less-than-good songs, the rhythm numbers vs. the ballads, the funny songs and novelties vs. the "serious" songs of love and loss, Cole as an advocate for the Great American Songbook vs. Cole the intrepid explorer of other options: world music, rhythm & blues, country & western. Cole was different from his contemporaries in other ways; for roughly ten years after the war, the majority of hitmakers on the pop charts were veterans of the big band experience, from Sinatra on down.

In this volume, Dr. Rawlins traces and investigates the varieties, tensions, and functions of friendship for males and females throughout the life course. Using both conceptual and illustrative chapters, the book portrays the degrees of involvement, choice, risk, ambivalence, and ambiguity within friendships, and explores the emotional texture of interactions among friends. A concluding section examines the prospects for friendship in the course of our post-modern blurring of public and private domains and discursive sites.

I wrote the first version of this book a month after Kenneth passed away. We were blaming ourselves for not following up on his sister's intuition. She had been his voice since they were born. I was mad at the world. I couldn't bring our Kenneth back. I knew it was a sign of depression. I encouraged the kids to seek help. I didn't feel like I needed help. I decided to write this book and lashed out at the world. As soon I finished the book, I felt so much better. I thought that I miraculously got healed. The devil is a liar. I sent Be the Head to two publishers, but they denied it. I was not even told a reason. When my cooking book was done, I sent it to both publishers; it was accepted right away. As a spiritual being, I practice meditation as soon as I finish my prayers. I heard a voice say, "Everyone who will read the book will know that it was made for a good cause, but they will also be able to tell that you were angry at the world when you wrote it. Rewrite it now. You will know and feel the difference. Being mean and bitter isn't who you are. Your dad raised you better. Your other books; Kenneth's Creole Cajun Creative Kitchen Recipes, and As Reality Strikes don't portray you as such. Why would you want Be the Head to give people the wrong impression of you? Instead, make it a tool that will help others." I obeyed the call. My spirit guide never fails me. This book will help raise awareness for the need to report abuse of any shape or form right away and a way for everyone to get CPR certification by making it a must. Seek help for yourself. Recognize the early stages of depression, seek help for yourself if needed; then get help for someone you love. Share good information to improve the lives of other people. Together we can make this world a better place. Remain blessed.
