Now a major film directed by Idris Elba, Yardie by Victor Headley shines a light on the brutal underworld of 90s London gang culture. At Heathrow Airport’s busy immigration desk, a newly arrived Jamaican strolls through with a kilo of top-grade cocaine strapped to his body. And keeps on walking . . . By the time the syndicate get to hear about the missing consignment, D is in business – for himself – as the Front Line’s newest don. But D’s treachery will never be forgotten – or forgiven. The message filters down from the Yardie crime lords to their soldiers on the streets: Find D. Find the merchandise. And make him pay for his sins . . .

I felt compelled that I had to make this trip to Jamaica in July, 2001 and once I got there it became apparent why I had to go. Within the first twenty-four hours after landing, I began to experience a series of unusual incidents. The first incident was kind of an eerie experience. Just before sunrise, I got up and went to the deck at the back of the house with my cousin Diana to do some meditations. After meditating, we spontaneously got up and held each other’s hands. I could hear the wind, and the sound of crickets, and leaves rustling. And then I no longer heard anything, or felt my body. Everywhere had turned black and everything had disappeared. It was as if I had fallen into an abyss. I don’t know how long it lasted because time had also ceased to exist. My hearing was the first to return and I heard this sound, like a man’s voice humming a tune: La la, la la, la la, la la la, la la, la,” repeatedly. It sounded familiar but I couldn’t recognize it at the time. Then I started to feel Diana’s hands and my body again. Later I remembered the tune the man was humming. It was, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty.” I started to ask Diana if she had heard the man humming, but I knew there was nobody out there. I wanted to tell her about what I had just experienced, but I couldn’t; I needed to process it for myself first. I began experiencing other incidents throughout my trip and decided to keep a journal. Back in America a few years later, I was getting ready to go on vacation when I discovered the journal in one of my carryon bag where I had left it. I was about to throw it away but started browsing through it and was immediately transported back in time to my trip in July, 2001. I took the journal with me on vacation where I started to transcribe it on my laptop. I continued to write on and off for years and reflected on some of my experiences growing up in Jamaica and New York which eventually evolved into Yardie.

Of the ethnic gangs that rule America's inner cities, none has had the impact of the Jamaican posses. Spawned in the ghettos of Kingston as mercenary street-fighters for the island's politicians, the posses began migrating to the United States in the early 1980's, just in time to catch and ride the crack wave as it engulfed the country. Laurie Gunst's provocative exposé of the Jamaican politicians' role in creating this problem is also a moving and compelling tale of suffering and exploitation. Leone Ross' substantial afterword examines further the issues raised by the book from a British and Jamaican perspective. --Back cover.

Named the Dolman Travel Book of the Year, The Dead Yard paints an unforgettable portrait of modern Jamaica. Since independence, Jamaica has gradually become associated with twin images--a resort-style travel Eden for foreigners and a new kind of hell for Jamaicans, a society where gangs control the areas where most Jamaicans live and drug lords like Christopher Coke rule elites and the poor alike. Ian Thomson's brave book explores a country of lost promise, where America's hunger for drugs fuels a dependent economy and shadowy politics. The lauded birthplace of reggae and Bob Marley, Jamaica is now sunk in corruption and hopelessness. A synthesis of vital history and unflinching reportage, The Dead Yard is "a fascinating account of a beautiful, treacherous country" (Irish Times).

Providing an account of Jamaica's criminal gangs - the posses, or Yardies - this book traces their development from their roots in the island's overcrowded shanties in the 1960s to their current position as ruthless drug-dealers throughout the world. Their exodus to the United States began in the late 1970s and continued in the the '80s, marked by the onslaught of crack along the East Coast. Posses are also based in Canada, and they have now moved into Britain. The book examines the effect on Britain's crime scene, and describes their methods and the police efforts to combat them.
