A special year like 1999 invites one to draw a balance of what has been achieved in the roughly 30 years of research and development in knowledge based systems (still abbreviated as XPS following the older term “expert systems”) and to take a look at th what the future may hold. For the 5 German conference on knowledge-based systems we therefore asked current and former speakers of the four working groups (FG’s) in the subdivision of knowledge-based systems (FA 1.5) of the German association of Informatics (GI) to present a survey of and future prospects for their respective fields: knowledge engineering, diagnosis, configuration, and case-based reasoning. An additional 14 technical papers deal with current topics in knowledge-based systems with an equal emphasis on methods and applications. They are selected from more than 50 papers accepted in the 4 parallel workshops of XPS-99: a) Knowledge Management, Organizational Memory and Reuse, b) various fields of applications, c) the traditional PuK Workshop (planning and configuration), and d) the GWCBR (German workshop on case-based reasoning). The other papers presented at these workshops are not included in this volume but are available as internal reports of Würzburg university together with the exhibition guide that emphasizing tool support for building knowledge based systems.

The success of diagnostic knowledge systems has been proved over the last decades. Nowadays, intelligent systems are embedded in machines within various domains or are used in interaction with a user for solving problems. However, the development of a knowledge system is still a critical issue. Similarly to projects dealing with customized software at a highly innovative level a precise specification often cannot be given in advance. Moreover, necessary requirements of the knowledge system can be defined not until the project has been started or are changing during the development phase. This thesis motivates that classical, document-centered approaches cannot be applied in such a setting. We introduce an agile process model for developing diagnostic knowledge systems, mainly inspired by the ideas of the eXtreme Programming methodology known in software engineering. The engineering process is supported at a primary level by the introduction of knowledge containers, that define an organized view of knowledge contained in the system. The actual knowledge is acquired and formalized right from start, and the integration to runnable knowledge systems is done continuously in order to allow for an early and concrete feedback. The validity and maintainability of the collected knowledge is ensured by appropriate test methods and restructuring techniques, respectively. Additionally, we propose learning methods to support the knowledge acquisition process sufficiently. The process model and its activities are evaluated in two real life applications: in a medical and in an environmental project the benefits of the agile development are clearly demonstrated.

Electronic business is a major force shaping the digital world. Yet, despite of years of research and standardization efforts, many problems persist that prevent e-business from achieving its full potential. Problems arise from different data vocabularies, classification schemas, document names, structures, exchange formats and their varying roles in business processes. Non-standardized business terminology, lack of common acceptable and understandable processes (grammar), and lack of common dialog rules (protocols) create barriers to improving electronic business processes. Handbook of Research on E-Business Standards and Protocols: Documents, Data and Advanced Web Technologies contains an overview of new achievements in the field of e-business standards and protocols, offers in-depth analysis of and research on the development and deployment of cutting-edge applications, and provides insight into future trends. This book unites new research that promotes harmony and agreement in business processes and attempts to choreograph business protocols and orchestrate semantic alignment between their vocabularies and grammar. Additionally, this Handbook of Research discusses new approaches to improving standards and protocols, which include the use of intelligent agents and Semantic Web technology.

Supporting competitive business analysis of financial reports through the automated analysis and interpretation of their natural language sections, presents specific challenges including information that can be ambiguous, camouflaged, or tacitly hidden within the narrative. These sections present terminology and structural challenges for information extraction that require the application of linguistic and heuristic based domain modelling to identify the information requirement. This thesis investigates a modelling approach that incrementally builds the business analysts information requirement as a series of Semantic Paths grounded in domain linguistic and user heuristics. A Competitive Analysis Ontology (CAO) is defined to provide semantic representation of the information requirement necessary to drive linguistic analysis and information extraction. The evaluation of the CAO within the financial sub-domain of competitive analysis is investigated, through the development of the Analyst Work Bench (AWB), is presented. The AWB linguistically analyses a Form 10-Q’s disclosure sections, automatically populates the CAO and provides the analyst’s information requirement. The AWB leverages the CAO Semantic Paths for information search and extraction capability, to support an analyst perform a competitive analysis, with reduced manual effort. Evaluation based on design-science principles, use methods from information retrieval and information system success to determine CAO performance and usability. A controlled experiment that compares competitive analysis performance using the AWB, against its manual performed equivalent, reported a 37% performance increase using the AWB to identify relevant information. Usability evaluation further found that CAO use contributed to task structuring, and structured information provision in a manner that directly supported task performance.
