The original plans for a meeting to celebrate the second centenary of the As tronomical Observatory of Palermo were for a celebration with a double character. The gathering was to have both a historical character, appropriate for a bicenten nial, and a technical character, to note and chronicle the new phase of the history of the Observatory, which has prospered in parallel with the development of this fairly recent topic in astronomical research, the physics of stellar and solar coronae. After the untimely death of the Observatory's Director, Giuseppe S. Vaiana (Pippo to his many friends), a number of colleagues and friends insisted that the celebration should nevertheless be held and should be dedicated to this farsighted scientist who stimulated the development of coronal physics from the early x-ray observations of the solar corona to the recognition of coronae as an observable feature of nearly all stars. This memorial dedication did not change the character of the meeting, which was held in Palermo from 22 to 26 June 1992; as his contributions are very alive in the papers presented at the meeting and collected here, Pippo Vaiana has certainly achieved his place in the history of Astronomy.

From the beginning of Space Astronomy, the Extreme Ultraviolet band of the spectrum (roughly defined as the decade in energy from 90-900 Å) was deemed to be the `unobservable ultraviolet'. Pioneering results from an EUV telescope on the Apollo-Soyuz Mission in 1975 forcibly demonstrated that this view was incorrect; but it required the all-sky surveys of the English Wide-Field Camera and the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer to demonstrate the broad potential of this field. Over 700 EUV sources have now been detected. Over 150 researchers from 16 countries gathered to share results in this new field at the International Astronomical Union Colloquium No. 152. Papers were presented on a wide variety of topics including cool star coronae, white dwarf atmospheres and evolution, neutron stars, the Io torus, cataclysmic variable stars, active galactic nuclei, the interstellar medium, winds and atmospheres of early type stars, and EUV plasma diagnostics. Selected manuscripts from this meeting are provided in these Conference Proceedings.

The book explains the classification of a set of Walsh functions into distinct self-similar groups and subgroups, where the members of each subgroup possess distinct self-similar structures. The observations on self-similarity presented provide valuable clues to tackling the inverse problem of synthesis of phase filters. Self-similarity is observed in the far-field diffraction patterns of the corresponding self-similar filters. Walsh functions form a closed set of orthogonal functions over a prespecified interval, each function taking merely one constant value (either +1 or −1) in each of a finite number of subintervals into which the entire interval is divided. The order of a Walsh function is equal to the number of zero crossings within the interval. Walsh functions are extensively used in communication theory and microwave engineering, as well as in the field of digital signal processing. Walsh filters, derived from the Walsh functions, have opened up new vistas. They take on values, either 0 or π phase, corresponding to +1 or -1 of the Walsh function value.
