Excerpt from Genealogy of the Family of Winchell in America: Embracing the Etymology and History of the Name and the Outlines of Some Collateral Genealogies The compiler has at length the satisfaction of laying before his numerous cousins the results of his genealogical investigations. Though expanded far beyond his expectations, he has to regret the omission of much biographical matter and the incompleteness of the genealogical statistics. The data published, however, embrace all that has been received; though the utmost diligence has been exerted to secure full returns. Those who find their genealogies incomplete will understand the cause of it. Every living head of a family whose address is here given has been applied to for information. The correspondence has extended to multitudes of single persons. All who did not respond at once, have been addressed by letter or circular from two to four times. The total number of genealogical letters written since Sept. 14, 1867, is 771. The total number of circulars sent out is 2015. A few have interested themselves actively and generously; and multitudes have responded promptly. The great mass of details has been culled from 512 letters. The compiler, however, has consulted many original records, including 48 volumes of land records and several volumes of church and town records of old Windsor; and 36 volumes of land records at Simsbury. The public records of Kensington, Torrington, Suffield and Topsham, (Me.) have also been searched at his request. He has had access to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England, Stiles' History of Ancient Windsor, Andrews' History of New Britain, the various published colonial documents of New England and New York, and numerous collateral works supplied by the library of the University of Michigan. The library of the Connecticut Historical Society, at Hartford, has afforded the opportunity to consult many published genealogies; and others have been had from private hands. It is not likely that many important facts have been overlooked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
