Susan Wood's work represents a number of milestones in American photography over a period of more than 40 years. She was involved with the original "Mad Men" of Madison Avenue and during that time won a Clios, the most sought-after award in advertising. Mademoiselle chose her as one of their top Ten Women of the Year and her work appeared in many other periodicals including Vogue, Life, Look, Harper's Bazaar, and New York magazine. Susan Wood was a founding member of the Women's Forum and was involved in the fight for women's rights and equality in the 1960s and 1970s. She was also friends with many of the vanguard of the feminist movement including Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem. Although her most famous magazine cover is an epochal photograph of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for Look, Susan is also noted for her movie stills. Under contract to Paramount Pictures, United Artists and 20th Century Fox, Ms. Wood was on set during the filming of movies that defined the 1960s such as Easy Rider and Hatari. She has been represented by Getty Images since 2004." --

Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations has placed the advancement of women at the forefront of its agenda. The UN Charter, for instance, is the first international document to recognize the equal rights of men and women. Yet how beneficial have UN programs been for women in the developing world? How must the UN change to make future programs more effective? And most importantly, what does the experience of women working within the UN system tell us about the UN's commitment to gender equity? Women and the United Nations: Reflections and New Horizons addresses these and other questions. Gathered here are papers and statements presented at a seminar organized by the UNIDO Forum of Women Professionals and held in Vienna in May 1995. The seminar marked the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and served as a preparatory activity for the Fourth World Conference on Women, to be held in Beijing in September 1995. The purpose of the seminar was to examine gender issues as they affect international development and especially to evaluate the UN's progress as a role model in the equitable treatment of women. The papers and statements, by well-known scholars and policy makers, address such issues as the gender implications of the UN's agenda for equality, development, and peace; women's role in the field operations and in technological advances, especially information technology; the dangers of technological change for women's health and the environment; improving women's status in the UN system; and increasing women's participation in economic and political decision making. Here Christina Wolbrecht boldly demonstrates how the Republican and Democratic parties have helped transform, and have been transformed by, American public debate and policy on women's rights. She begins by showing the evolution of the positions of both parties on women's rights over the past five decades. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Republicans were slightly more favorable than Democrats, but by the early 1980s, the parties had polarized sharply, with Democrats supporting, and Republicans opposing, such policies as the Equal Rights Amendment and abortion rights. Wolbrecht not only traces the development of this shift in the parties' relative positions--focusing on party platforms, the words and actions of presidents and presidential candidates, and the behavior of the parties' delegations in Congress--but also seeks to explain the realignment. The author considers the politically charged developments that have contributed to a redefinition and expansion of the women's rights agenda since the 1960s--including legal changes, the emergence of the modern women's movement, and changes in patterns of employment, fertility, and marriage. Wolbrecht explores how party leaders reacted to these developments and adopted positions in ways that would help expand their party's coalition. Combined with changes in those coalitions--particularly the rise of social conservatism within the GOP and the affiliation of social movement groups with the Democratic party--the result was the polarization characterizing the parties' stances on women's rights today.
