This compendium showcases EVERY character ever mentioned in the Harry Potter books, films and play: the good, the bad and the misunderstood. With more than 700 entries, this book is packed from cover to cover! J.K. Rowling’s collection of mystical multitudes is what makes the wizarding world so enchanting. To dive into Harry’s story is to immerse yourself in the richness of a magical universe filled with wizarding history, culture and lore. A world of witches, wizards, owls, elves, non- magical people, anti-non-magical-people people, folks who can talk to snakes and snakes who used to be folks. There are mind-readers, shape-shifters, centaurs, giants, ghosts (nearly headless and fully formed) and one enormous, extremely ill- tempered tree. This massive tome details every character created by J.K. Rowling and appearing in the official Harry Potter canon of books, movies and plays. Each entry highlights one character, where you will find details of when the character was first mentioned, appearance, wizard school, house, patronus, wand, related family members, skills and achievements, personal history and more. The Compendium also include genealogical charts and family trees for the major characters, world maps detailing important locations, homes and schools, as well as charts detailing alliances between characters.

Peace reigns over the land. The sorcerer Mellette is sealed within his catacombs, Emory and Erin happily reside in Wizardmont, and Tostan and Maria are making a life together in Fortun. Nevertheless, Tostan is troubled. Trading horses barely calms his warrior spirit, while Emory's continuing blindness nags at his heart. Challenged to do something about his friend's affliction, Tostan leaves his comfortable life behind and embarks upon a dangerous quest for a cure. Ride with Tostan and his warhorse Surefoot as they travel beyond Birkun to the land of the fiercely independent Druids. Walk with Tostan amidst the solar stones and tarandu as he makes new friends, debates skeptic leaders, and engages mistrustful rivals. Watch and listen as they take the measure of Tostan and his quest. Will Tostan's abilities negotiate the political intrigues and overcome the mistrust of the Druids? Can he find a cure before the sharp knives of the Toblarian Assassins find him? The friendship of Tostan and Emory was forged in childhood and tempered at Wizardmont and Bryunzet. It binds them together, like brothers. They have each sacrificed much to keep their friendship strong. How much more is Tostan willing to sacrifice?

Though he has authored more than eleven novels including, Cassandra Singing, The Suicide’s Wife, Abducted by Circumstance, and the recent London Bridge in Plague and Fire, David Madden has been publishing short stories for all six decades of his active career. The Last Bizarre Tale consists of works that appeared in journals but that have not appeared together as a collection. Madden used two stories, “The Singer” and “Second Look Presents: the Rape of an Indian Brave,” as chapters in his 1980 novel On the Big Wind. “The Headless Girl’s Mother” was first published as a chapter in a serialized novel entitled Hair of the Dog. Two other stories developed out of longer versions of Madden’s novels. “A Demon in My View” is part of a sequel, not yet published, to Bijou. All of the stories in David Madden’s third collection are distinguished by variety of content and by shifting styles and often innovative techniques. They are to varying degrees and in various ways bizarre in their characters and their relationships, in the kinds of internal and external conflicts, and in locales and themes. The title story, The Last Bizarre Tale, involving a corpse that has hung on a hook in a funeral home garage for decades, is evocative of Poe and, in its dark, grotesque humor, Flannery O’Connor and Carson McCullers. “Process is as important as product to David Madden,” writes editor James Perkins, “and one can learn as much about the process of writing as about the human condition by a careful reading of these stories.”
