Timeless, Bestselling True Story of a World War II Hero Corrie ten Boom was the first licensed female watchmaker in the Netherlands who became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's concentration camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century. In World War II she and her family risked their lives to help Jews and underground workers escape from the Nazis. In 1944 their lives were forever altered when they were betrayed, arrested, and thrown into the infamous Nazi death camps. Only Corrie among her family survived. This is her incredible true story--and ultimately the story of how faith, hope, and love triumphed over unthinkable evil. Now in a beautiful deluxe edition, this beloved book continues to declare that God's love will overcome, heal, and restore. Because there is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still, and no darkness so thick that His light can't break through.

This is a book about viewpoint. Point of view can be physical, “I am facing south while you are facing north”. Point of view can be rational, “I see this idea as true while your idea is false”. Have two people stand back to back in strange surroundings and each will ask the other what they see and will listen very carefully for the information that can be gleaned from each other's replies. Curiously, once we stand side by side, we begin to find some disagreement with each other. We might not disagree so much with what is viewed as with how things are viewed. Yet we can still discuss differences in physical viewpoint without viewpoint itself getting in its own way. But this is not the case with rational viewpoints. We tend to argue our rational viewpoints to our deaths and pursue the deaths of others who dare see differently. We have little if any real regard for the value of information contained within other rational views. We call this conviction. We praise our steadfastness and laud these beliefs as though they reveal something other than ignorance beyond personal perspective. Yet, since God also seems to exist beyond physical perspective, what might we inadvertently devalue through our convictions? Yes, our values have religious implications that our beliefs conspire to conceal. Here I present the basics of realism and show how realism influences our psychology, informs our values, and reveals a path forward that avoids the pitfalls of belief. It is my hope that we can learn to stand side by side while valuing back to back views.

The Hiding Place is Corrie ten Boom’s personal story of faith, forgiveness, and love for the persecuted Jewish community during the World War II Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland. Part of an underground resistance movement, Corrie and her family risked their lives to hide Jewish friends within a secret wall space of the Beje, their beloved clock shop and home in Haarlem, Netherlands. Her heroic actions eventually led to her arrest and imprisonment at Ravensbrück, the German Reich’s largest concentration camp for women. For the first time, the ten Boom family’s heart-wrenching story of sacrifice and survival is presented as a special edition complete with rare family photos, accents of Dutch Delft–style design, artwork by Dutch artists, and personal ephemera. Hand-lettered inspirational quotes and Scripture combined with artwork reminiscent of World War II Europe make The Hiding Place come alive like never before.

From the former director of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, a timely and passionate case for the role of the well-designed object in the digital age. Curator and scholar Glenn Adamson opens Fewer, Better Things by contrasting his beloved childhood teddy bear to the smartphones and digital tablets children have today. He laments that many children and adults are losing touch with the material objects that have nurtured human development for thousands of years. The objects are still here, but we seem to care less and know less about them. In his presentations to groups, he often asks an audience member what he or she knows about the chair the person is sitting in. Few people know much more than whether it's made of wood, plastic, or metal. If we know little about how things are made, it's hard to remain connected to the world around us. Fewer, Better Things explores the history of craft in its many forms, explaining how raw materials, tools, design, and technique come together to produce beauty and utility in handmade or manufactured items. Whether describing the implements used in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, the use of woodworking tools, or the use of new fabrication technologies, Adamson writes expertly and lovingly about the aesthetics of objects, and the care and attention that goes into producing them. Reading this wise and elegant book is a truly transformative experience.
