Excerpt from Winter Evening Tales In these Tales, as in many of her other works, humble life has held a strong attraction for Mrs. Barr's pen. Her mind and heart naturally turn in this direction; and although her wonderful talent, within its wide range, deals with all stations and conditions of life, she has but little relish for the gilded artificialities of society. And a strong love for those whose condition makes life for them something real and earnest and definite of purpose. For this reason, among many others, the Christian people of America have a hearty admiration for Mrs. Barr and her work, knowing it to be not only of surpassin human interest, but spiritually help: ful and inspiring, with an influence that makes for morality and good living, in the highest sense in which a Christain understands the term. Excerpt from Winter Evening Tales, Collected Among the Cottagers in the South of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 At fourteen years of age, I was, by my own choice, bound apprentice to a joiner in the neighbourhood, with whom I was obliged to serve out my time, much against my will; fori deemed myself master of the craft, and much superior to my teacher, before half my time was expired. After I had strug gled through it, I went home. My father hinted to me, that I ought to take the wages my late master offered me to con tinue with him, until something better should be found. But this I slighted with high disdain, declaring that I would go to London or America, before I accepted ofless than double the sum proposed: and that, at any rate, was I never, to learn any thing better than making a plough or cart-wheel? Excerpt from Winter Evening Tales: Collected Among the Cottagers in the South of Scotland Though I believe my performance as a ploughman was of a very inferior species, I remember, I soon he came superciliously vain of it, which provoked m neighbour ploughmen to treat me with very little de erence. I was not slack in telling them, that it arose all from envy, at seeing themselves so much outdone by me, in a business which they had practised all their lives, but had never understood. There was no Stand ing of this from a novice, for the border hinds are an independent and high-spirited race of men, and mat ters went on any way but cordially between us. My partial father came over to my side, which made the breach still the wider; and at length they told him to my face, that they would no longer work along with me; for, besides not keeping up my part, and leaving them all the drudgery, I took it upon me to direct them, while, at the same time, I knew no more of farm-la bour than a cat. Excerpt from Evening Tales for the Winter, Vol. 1 of 3: Being a Selection of Wonderful Supernatural Stories; Translated From the Chinese, Turkish and German The Editor hopes, that one circumstance, if no other, will recommend his book to the favorable consideration of the public. Great care has been taken to admit nothing of immoral or irreligious tendency. The sto ries are such as will not raise a blush on the cheek of the most fastidious. Some of them have no particular end, save the amusement of the reader; others contain useful allegories, which all may profit by reading. If we may be permitted to make any distinction among them, we would particularly notice that powerfully written tale, The Magic Dice, in which many and use ful lessons may be found. In it, the danger of tamper lng with evil, the folly of impertinent curiosity, the evil consequences of gaming, and the necessity of pru dence in the choice of a companion for life, are set forth in the guise of an allegory, in a light no less vivid than novel. Excerpt from Tales and Sketches, Vol. 4: Including the Browne of Bodsbeck, Winter Evening Tales, Sheperd's Calendar, &C., &C In the year 1807, when on a jaunt through the valleys on Nith and Annan, I learned the following story on the spot where the incidents occurred, and even went and visited all those connected with it, so that there is no doubt with regard to its authenticity. In a cottage called Knowe-back, on the large farm of Druinlochie, lived Tibby Hyslop, a respectable spinster, about the age of forty I thought when I saw her, but, of course, not so old when the first incidents occurred which this singular tale relates. Tibby was represented to me as being a good Christian, not in name and profession only, but in word and in deed; and I believe I may add, in heart and in soul. Nevertheless, there was something in her manner and deportment different from other people - a sort of innocent simplicity, bordering on silliness, together with an instability of thought, that, in the eyes of many, approached to abstraction. But then Tibby could repeat the book of the Evangelist Luke by heart, and many favourite chapters both of the Old and New Testaments; while there was scarcely one in the whole country so thoroughly acquainted with those Books from beginning to end; for. though she had read a portion every day for forty years, she had never perused any other books hut the Scriptures. Excerpt from Winter Evening Tales, Collected Among the Cottagers in the South of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 I have for these twenty years been convinced of the truth of the proverb, that a fool can best teach a wise man wit; and that it is, in fact, on the egregious misconduct of the thoughtless and foolish part of mankind that the wise and prudent calculate for their success; and from these that they take their lessons of perseverance and good management. It is on this principle that the following sheets are indited, that others may be warned from the rock on which I have split; I therefore conceal nothing, but relate uniformly the simple truth, though manifestly to my disadvantage. I have not written my life as a model to be copied, but as one to be avoided, and may those who laugh at my inconsistencies learn from them to steer a different course. There is one great evil under the sun, from which, if youth is not warned, their success in life will be frustrated, and their old age without comfort and without respect. From it my misfortunes are all to be traced, and from it I am suffering at this day. I look back on the days that are past, and am grieved. I can now see all my incongruities, and wonder at my inadvertency in not being able to correct them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
