This handbook provides a comprehensive, practical, and independent guide to all aspects of making weather observations. The second edition has been fully updated throughout with new material, new instruments and technologies, and the latest reference and research materials. Traditional and modern weather instruments are covered, including how best to choose and to site a weather station, how to get the best out of your equipment, how to store and analyse your records and how to share your observations. The book's emphasis is on modern electronic instruments and automatic weather stations. It provides advice on replacing 'traditional' mercury-based thermometers and barometers with modern digital sensors, following implementation of the UN Minamata Convention outlawing mercury in the environment. The Weather Observer's Handbook will again prove to be an invaluable resource for both amateur observers choosing their first weather instruments and professional observers looking for a comprehensive and up-to-date guide.

"In Wind Speed: An Overview, the history and development of wind energy is reviewed. Scientific trends in the academic field of wind energy are determined using a scientometric network analysis. The relationship between wind speed forecasting and wind disasters is evaluated, particularly focusing on extra-tropical and tropical cyclones due to their dynamic origins. Wind energy plays a significant role in clean energy sources, and the amount of energy that can be produced from a wind turbine is directly related to the value of the wind speed in that specific location. The closing study focuses on wind as a source of energy in Kitka and Koznica, maintaining that in order to harness wind energy, it is necessary to carry out terrain condition analyses for the installation of wind turbines"--

Given a series of wind speeds and directions from the port of Fremantle the aim of this monograph is to detect general weather patterns and seasonal characteristics. To separate the daily land and sea breeze cycle and other short-term disturbances from the general wind, the series is divided into a daily and a longer term, synoptic component. The latter is related to the atmospheric pressure field, while the former is studied in order i) to isolate particular short-term events such as calms, storms and oscillating winds, and ii) to determine the land and sea breeze cycle which dominates the weather pattern for most of the year. All these patterns are described in detail and are related to the synoptic component of the data. Two time series models for directional data and a new measure of angular association are introduced to provide the basis for certain parts of the analysis.
