Between 1895 and 1930 William Lawrence Baillieu built one of Australia's greatest business empires. From the 1890s he was a major shareholder in what became the Herald and Weekly Times Ltd and the financial success of the company added greatly to his wealth. He was a major player in many of the company's critical decisions, but, while he occasionally used the company's newspapers to boost his business interests, unlike many plutocrats he was primarily interested in newspaper ownership as a business venture rather than a vehicle for promoting his political views.

Boom or bust? What was the truth of the great land booms that swept Australia in the 1880s and 1890s? How was it that some speculators amassed prodigious fortunes, while others went so spectacularly broke? Seventy years after the events, historian Michael Cannon began sifting through thousands of records and documents, long since filed and forgotten. He pieced together an incredible trail of corruption and roguery, rarely if ever equalled in any parliamentary democracy. When the bare bones of this expos were first published in 1966, it caused an immediate sensation as the forebears of many well-known families were involved. Never before had any Australian historian been able to document such unbridled greed and over-riding ambition. Extended and revised, The Land Boomers is generously illustrated with cartoons, photographs and etchings of the time, and includes an introduction by the author on how he came to research and write the book.

William Lawrence Baillieu (1859-1936) founded one of Australia largest and most long-lasting family fortunes. He made his first fortune as a real estate agent and land developer in the Melbourne land boom of the 1880s, but lost almost everything in the crash of the early 1890s. Although the Victorian economy remained in deep depression throughout the 1890s, Baillieu made a new fortune and by 1900 was again a wealthy man. The sources of his new wealth have always been a mystery. This paper shows that Bailleu's business operations as a real estate agent, company liquidator and company promoter produced a reasonably steady income stream, but it was the super profits he made from Victorian gold mines that were the main source of his new fortune.

Rupert Murdoch's extraordinary career has no parallel. His control of Fox news, which so successfully supports the Trump presidency, is a key force in American politics. In the UK, his control of The Sun and The Times leaves politicians scrambling to get him onside. But what do we know about the man himself? This book looks closely at the Murdochs, focusing on Rupert's father Keith, who built the family's media power and cultivated the anti-establishment instincts that his son Rupert is known for. Roberts traces the life of the Murdochs, how Rupert Murdoch's view of the world was formed, and assesses it's impact on the media that influences our politics today.
