Excerpt from Wild Life Conservation, in Theory and Practice: Lectures Delivered Before the Forest School of Yale University, 1914 If it is worth while to preserve the wild life of our country, and of the world at large, then it is the duty of the university educators of America to take up their share of the white man's burden. The training of a grand army of embryologists and morphologists is all very well; but what about saving from annihilation the species that our zoologists arc studying? Which is the more important: the saving of the pinnated grouse from extermination, or studying the embryology of a clutch of grouse eggs? What is needed - and now demanded - of professors and teachers in all our universities, colleges, normal schools and high schools is vigorous and persistent teaching of the ways and means that can successfully he employed in the wholesale manufacture of public sentiment in behalf of the rational and effective protection of wild life. Thus far the educators of this country as a class and a mass have not done a hundredth part of their duty toward the wild life of the United States and Alaska. Conservationists have long been aware that political boundaries rarely coincide with natural boundaries. From the establishment of early "peace parks" to the designation of continental migratory pathways, a wide range of transborder mechanisms to protect biodiversity have been established by conservationists in both the public and private sectors. Conservation Across Borders presents a broad overview of the history of transboundary conservation efforts and an accessible introduction to current issues surrounding the subject. Through detailed examinations of two initiatives, the International Sonoran Desert Alliance (ISDA) and the Yellowstone to Yukon Initiative (Y2Y), the book helps readers understand the benefits and challenges of landscape-scale protection. In addition to discussing general concepts and the specific experience of ISDA and Y2Y, the author considers the emerging concept of "conservation effectiveness" and offers a comparative analysis of the two projects. The book ends with a discussion of the complex relationships among civil society, governments, and international borders. By considering the history, goals, successes, and failures of two divergent initiatives, the book offers important insights into the field of transborder conservation along with valuable lessons for those studying or working in the field.
