Thought-provoking and emotionally moving, The Search for the Unicorn is a memoir recounting the months before and after the tragic suicide of the author’s partner. The work integrates his thoughts with her writings to tell the brief yet profound and multifaceted story of their life together—during life and after death. Readers will move back and forth in time, watching the young couple fall in love in university while also observing the darkest lows of hospitalization. The two narratives aim to eclipse as a tragic yet hopeful ending, the dark within the light, and the light within the dark. It’s a journey of faith and an exploration of the tensions between mental forces and the forces of true love. In goodwill, the author hopes to open transparent conversations about the stigma of suicide and suicide loss by sharing his perspective of healing and clarity. All proceeds of the sales of this book will be donated to CAMH (The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health).

This is my first collection of poems and limericks. The ideas were jotted down on hot summer days in Algonquin Park or cold winter evenings at Lake Huron. These poems are designed for young children to read and enjoy...maybe to inspire their own ideas for writing poetry or even short stories. After over 30 years of teaching in primary education in Toronto, I drew from my experiences and fond memories of teaching children to read and write. From my great nephew Oliver and niece Abby, to my 99 year old father, Edward, I have written about my experiences, thoughts and dreams; words and prose that I hope children will love and remember. It has truly been a work in progress. As this is my first book, I have learned a lot and recognised the work that it takes to concentrate to complete a project like this. And I like to acknowledge the hard work and creativeness of my daughter and illustrator, Sara Rodgers. Thank you to everyone that contributed ideas and encouragement. And to the entire team at FriesenPress.

The true story of Ira Einhorn, the Philadelphia antiwar crusader, environmental activist, and New Age guru with a murderous dark side. During the cultural shockwaves of the 1960s and ’70s, Ira Einhorn—nicknamed the “Unicorn”—was the leading radical voice for the antiwar movement at the University of Pennsylvania. At his side were such noted activists as Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. A brilliantly articulate advocate for peace in a turbulent era, he rallied followers toward the growing antiestablishment causes of free love, drugs, and radical ecological reform. In 1979, when the mummified remains of his girlfriend, Holly Maddux, a Bryn Mawr flower child from Tyler, Texas, were found in a trunk in his apartment, Einhorn claimed a CIA frame-up. Incredibly, the network of influential friends, socialites, and powerful politicians he’d charmed and manipulated over the years supported him. Represented by renowned district attorney and future senator Arlen Specter, Einhorn was released on bail. But before trial, he fled the country to an idyllic town in the French wine region and disappeared. It would take more than twenty years—and two trials—to finally bring Einhorn to justice. Based on more than two years of research and 250 interviews, as well as the chilling private journals of Einhorn and Maddux, prize-winning journalist Steven Levy paints an astonishing and complicated portrait of a man motivated by both genius and rage. The basis for 1998 NBC television miniseries The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer, The Unicorn’s Secret is a “spellbinding sociological/true crime study,” revealing the dark and tragic dimensions of a man who defined an era, only to shatter its ideals (Publishers Weekly).

The Ellfs of the Jeweled Isles had gathered to celebrate their prince’s Majority Ritual when a strange fleet of oilskin boats landed on their shores. They brought a group of Celts called Firbolgs and the deformed gods they revered, the Fomorii. So long had it been since the Ellfs had known war that they were quickly overrun by the fierce invaders. Now, Prince Ellfstane and the Sorceress Katara must look into their people’s forgotten memories to find a way to defend their isles from destruction. While Katara seeks a powerful weapon, Ellfstane discovers a spell to keep the kingdom away from the enemy’s clawing hands. Together with the gods that sponsor their magical abilities, they craft a new home for their people in a place the Firbolgs would never expect.
