From an author hailed for her “great characters”—a brave young woman finds love and adventure in the harsh frontier of nineteenth century Australia (Jo Lambert). After a scandal drove them from their native England, the Noble family have traveled to the other side of the world to start a new life in the Australian colonies. And young Pippa Noble is determined to reclaim their honor by turning her father’s hopes for an outback farm into a reality. But her ambition is frowned upon by a society that believes a woman should know her place. Pippa learns some hard lessons about the unforgiving bush country, sometimes with devastating consequences. When an unfortunate circumstance leaves her tending the farm alone, she is pleasantly surprised to find a helping hand—and a caring heart—in Gil Ashford, the ruggedly handsome owner of the neighboring estate. But her family’s past comes to haunt her in the form of an unexpected visitor from England, putting everything Pippa has worked for in jeopardy. And she must decide what is worth fighting for—the land she loves, or the man she loves more . . .

In Boomerang, a novel told in vignettes both real and fictive, a father attempting to cope with the tragic murder of his son learns that actions return to haunt or reward. He becomes the embodiment of Hannah's ideal of forbearance, dignity, and decency in the face of incomprehensible death. In Never Die Hannah mingles hilarity and horror as the frontier West is killed off by the onset of automobiles, biplanes, and nitroglycerine bombs. A gallery of grotesque characters - a judges' evil dwarf henchman, a nymphomaniacal schoolteacher, and a homosexual doctor named Fingo - populate this rollicking postmodern novel in which Old West myths collide with the anarchy of the twentieth century.

“My vocation was supposed to be joy, and I was speaking at funerals.” Shortly after being hired by Yale University to study joy, Angela Gorrell got word that a close family member had died by suicide. Less than a month later, she lost her father to a fatal opioid addiction and her nephew, only twenty-two years old, to sudden cardiac arrest. The theoretical joy she was researching at Yale suddenly felt shallow and distant—completely unattainable in the fog of grief she now found herself in. But joy was closer at hand than it seemed. As she began volunteering at a women’s maximum-security prison, she met people who suffered extensively yet still showed a tremendous capacity for joy. Talking with these women, many of whom had struggled with addiction and suicidal thoughts themselves, she realized: “Joy doesn’t obliterate grief. . . . Instead, joy has a mysterious capacity to be felt alongside sorrow and even—sometimes most especially—in the midst of suffering.” This is the story of Angela’s discovery of an authentic, grounded Christian joy. But even more, it is an invitation for others to seize upon this more resilient joy as a counteragent to the twenty-first-century epidemics of despair, addiction, and suicide—a call to action for communities that yearn to find joy and are willing to “walk together through the shadows” to find it.

All Christians are interested in heaven the future abode of God’s children. In fact people who may not enjoy a vital Christian life through a definite relationship with Christ manifest an unusual in-terest in this subject. The most popular gospel songs are those which tell of Jesus and heaven. Close to the favorite, “The Old Rugged Cross,’’ are such songs as “No Disappointment in Heaven,” “The Sweet Bye and Bye,” “When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder” and those of a similar nature. The questions most frequently asked in a public question box are those about the future life. “Where are the dead?” “Are they in a conscious state of existence?” “After death will we know them?” “Will we be able to converse with them?” “What change will the resurrection make in the present state of the dead?” All of these indicate that people are unusually interested in the future life. This book has been written to give light on the subject of heaven and to answer many of these questions concerning the future life. Doctor Heslop, the author, has for years been an ardent Bible student. He has had a long experience as a Bible teacher, all of which has given him a wide grasp of the scriptural teaching on this subject. He brings an array of scriptural statements to substantiate his teachings. The reading of this book will bring comfort to those whose loved ones have departed to be with the Lord; it will inspire those who may be disheartened to continue the good fight of faith; it will encourage those who may have a tendency to discouragement because of the conditions existing in this present wicked world; it will brighten the hope of all who are followers of Christ and who are walking toward that city of gold; it will help us to be patient while we pass our pilgrimage here looking “for that city which hath foundations whose builder and maker is God.” D. Dutch and English settlers brought the first enslaved people to New Jersey in the seventeenth century. By the time of the Revolutionary War, slavery was an established practice on labor-intensive farms throughout what became known as the Garden State. The progenitor of the influential Morris family, Lewis Morris, brought Barbadian slaves to toil on his estate of Tinton Manor in Monmouth County. Colonel Tye, an escaped slave from Shrewsbury, joined the British Ethiopian Regiment during the Revolutionary War and led raids throughout the towns and villages near his former home. Charles Reeves and Hannah Van Clief married soon after their emancipation in 1850 and became prominent citizens of Lincroft, as did their next four generations. Author Rick Geffken reveals stories from New Jersey's dark history of slavery.

Compassionate Leadership for School Improvement and Renewal aims to equip educational leaders with the knowledge, skills, and learning experiences necessary to approach their work from an intentional stance of compassion. Schools serve as both sites and sources of suffering; yet compassionate leadership can facilitate healing for students, educators, and community members. The moment is right to move the field toward a compassion-centered approach to leadership. In recent years, people around the world have experienced unfathomable loss and suffering due to the COVID-19 pandemic, persistent inequities and subsequent social justice protests, war and violence, and catastrophic natural disasters. These events created perpetual anxiety, stress, fear, uncertainty, loss, and grief for millions of people—including educators. Now perhaps more than ever, people need to give and receive compassion. The purpose of the volume is to build educational leaders’ capacity to demonstrate compassion, foster collective compassion within their schools and districts, establish organizational environments in which compassion is routinely given and received, and, subsequently, transform schools into sites of healing. Ultimately, through the unique contributions of each chapter, this volume offers a path toward school improvement that is both renewing and sustaining. ENDORSEMENTS: "As a former school counselor and school administrator, my view about compassionate leadership is one grounded in relational practice. This may be obvious to some, but unfortunately lost on many. This thoughtful volume edited by Kara Lasater and Kristina LaVenia explores a desperately needed reformulation of school leadership for our times. Compassionate leadership takes enormous courage because it works against much of the institutional ethos that forms and frames the role, thinking, and behaviors of those ostensibly charged to both manage and lead schools." — William C. Frick, University of Oklahoma "The education system is in its most challenging period in decades, perhaps in the past century. The need now is to address student, staff and organizational suffering. Lasater and LaVenia et. al., offer antidotes in this volume by providing up to date research, theory and insight to cultivate, conceptualize and practice compassionate educational leadership. For those who teach and lead with their heart, this book is essential reading." — Joseph A. Polizzi, Sacred Heart University "In an increasingly challenging educational landscape, leaders find themselves facing teacher shortages, student trauma, and learning loss. Schools could easily become institutions rife with secondary trauma and burned out professionals operating in stark contrast to the unifying motivations that drew each of us into this profession. This volume reminds us that among the many skill sets leaders must employ, organizational and leader compassion fulfills a fundamental human need and unlocks a means by which schools can transform from professional survival to the joyful work of changing lives for the better." — Joshua Ray, Greenwood Public Schools
