Much has been written about the practice of one-to-one spiritual directions, but much less about small group communities that offer in-depth mutual spiritual support and guidance to its members. But small groups are most likely the more usual setting for spiritual companionship and have strong biblical, theological and historical foundation in the Christian tradition. This book offers a detailed presentation of ten small group models, plus guidance in group leadership dynamics. It also presents material related to group retreat work, spiritual guidance with organizations and peer supervision/consultation model for supporting leaders of spiritual companionship groups and retreats. Church leaders, spiritual directors and educators are looking for the kinds of resources this book provides to assist them in understanding and leading groups and retreats.

All people dream regularly, regardless of their circumstances, whether they remember their dreams upon awakening or not. From the beginning of human history, dreams have been a source of creative inspiration and spiritual renewal, emotional and psychological insight, and scientific and cultural innovation.

This multidisciplinary volume examines the cultural and social relevance of dream studies, looking at various ways that the field can contribute to the resolution of the modern West's most troubling social issues. The essays offer novel insights on education, sexual abuse, ecology, crime, race, gender, religion, politics, death, and cross-cultural conflict. The contributors argue that the study of dreams can provide valuable resources to regain a vibrant, trustworthy sense of moral and spiritual orientation in life.

At one time when an individual wanted a direct, personal experience of God that person turned to his or her dreams. The early third century Christian defender of the faith, Tertullian, observed, "Is it not known to all people that the dream is the most usual way that God reveals himself to man?" Yet by the eleventh century, King William II of England states, "They are not good Christians that regard dreams." Why did this reversal of opinion occur, not only in Christian thinking, but in Jewish and Islamic attitudes also? God and Dreams: Is There a Connection? traces the historic connection between God and dreams and examines why this shift happened. While particular attention is given to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic thought, several secular disciplines are discussed also. After investigating the different points of view, an argument is made that the connection between God and dreams still exists.

The largest section of my book is the collection of poetry that I have written over the last 30 years. They are remarkable in part because they were written by a talented engineer, in part because they were replaced by dreams as a way of keeping track of my subconscious mind as the years went by. It's the last quarter of the book that I find most interesting. It contains considerable personal history as I recover from the isolation (lost in space!) of my childhood, with mxed results (both credit and blame) for the Parkinson's Disease and the deep brain surgery done to ease its ravages. But little of this needs to be repeated on the back cover of the book. What I want there is in the manuscript 47528CEcc as submitted 10/11/07

“The Art of Dying speaks to modern readers with refreshing frankness and wit. It covers the subject thoroughly, from how to inform relatives of impending death, to coping with pain and fear, to death rituals, to preparing for a possible afterlife or, depending on one’s viewpoint, the end of it all.” —Publishers Weekly “Along with our caring presence, this book may be the finest gift we can give someone facing the last stage of life.” —Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People “Dr. Weenolsen . . . doesn’t duck the tough questions.” —M. Brewster Smith, PhD, former president, American Psychological Association “This book gives the same things a good support group does—compassionate sympathy and practical advice for people sharing pain. It will be a godsend.” —Rebecca Brown, author of Gifts of the Body “Begins with ‘the day you receive the diagnosis’ and the sudden realization that ‘never again will you be as you were. Even if by some miracle you heal, it will be only temporary.’ Weenolsen takes the panic and paralysis out of such news through wise, aggressive, no-holds-barred approaches.” —Patricia Holt, San Francisco Chronicle “A book everyone can benefit from reading.” —Nancy Pearl, author of More Book Lust “Also for family and friends of dying persons, for professionals in the health-care fields, and for those who train them.” —Hannelore Wass, PhD, founding editor, Death Studies

Carol Adams explores the inner life of spiritual growth with the outer life of practical compassion and examines the reasons why becoming a vegetarian is deeply wedded to spiritual practice. She shows how the practice of creating mindfulness and disciplining the mind meshes with becoming an activist for nonviolence, and reveals how in our busy and stressed-out world it is essential to sustain and replenish the soul through spiritual discipline. The Inner Art of Vegetarianism is an empowering book for all those who wish to have their soul nourished and follow the spiritual path of vegetarianism.
