Drawing on both her roots in Kentucky and her adventures with Manhattan Coop boards, Where We Stand is a successful black woman's reflection--personal, straight forward, and rigorously honest--on how our dilemmas of class and race are intertwined, and how we can find ways to think beyond them.

This Research Topic is a call for papers to provide an up to date assessment of current attempts to introduce tolerogenic therapies into clinical practice. Tolerance has been a highly sought after goal in the field of organ transplantation for over half a century, and is now readily achievable in rodent models, but considerable barriers remain to successfully translating tolerogenic treatments to the clinic. The initial call for this Research Topic has been aimed to provide an overview of recent advances made within the European RISET and American ITN networks with regard to tolerogenic strategies in clinical transplantation, autoimmune disease, and allergy. Articles will also cover the barriers to clinical tolerance induction and new emerging approaches to overcome such barriers. 1. Collaborative networks working towards the goal of therapeutic tolerance induction 2. Prope tolerance and minimization of immunosuppression 3. Lessons from operationally tolerant patients 4. Targeted withdrawal of immunosuppression 5. Stem cells and hematopoietic chimerism as a route to tolerance 6. Promoting regulatory T cells 7. Tolerogenic dendritic cells and negative vaccination 8. Inhibitory pathways and mechanisms in tolerance 9. Memory T cells and heterologous immunity 10. The innate response to allotransplants 11. Chronic graft loss--what are the missing links? 12. The impact of graft microenvironment on tolerance

The Third African Sanitation and Hygiene Conference was held in Kigali, Rwanda in July 2011. It was hosted by the Government of the Republic of Rwanda, and the African Ministers Council on Water. The meeting attracted extraordinary interest: over 1000 people registered and nearly 900 people attended from a total of 67 countries, including representatives of 42 African countries. The content of AfricaSan 3 was aligned with the needs of countries as defined in country preparation meetings which took place in advance. AfricaSan 3 looked to address the country needs and to commitments and country action planning. Different groups (ministers, civil society, local government, utilities, and donors) committed to actions to support the goals of AfricaSan. The goal of the AfricaSan process is to support countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goal, (MDG) for sanitation and hygiene. This book is freely available to download electronically from the IWA Publishing site Sanitation and Hygiene in Africa: Where do We Stand? takes stock of progress made by African countries through the AfricaSan process since 2008 and the progress needed to meet the MDG on sanitation by 2015 and beyond. This book addresses priorities which have been identified by African countries as the key elements which need to be addressed in order to accelerate progress. • Reviews progress on implementing the eThekwini Declaration to meet the MDG for sanitation and progress generally in Africa. It analyses what is needed to accelerate the rate of access to sanitation in Africa. • Shares advances in the evidence base on sanitation and hygiene in Africa to be able to assist decision-makers to overcome key blockages in implementing large-scale sanitation and hygiene programs. • Raises the profile of sanitation and hygiene as a determinant of sustainable development in order to strengthen leadership and advocacy for sustained sanitation and behavior changes. This book is essential reading for government staff from Ministries responsible for sanitation, sector stakeholders working in NGOs, CSOs and agencies with a focus on sanitation and hygiene and water and Sanitation specialists. It is also suitable for Masters courses in water and sanitation and for researchers and the donor community.

Soft-tissue reconstruction for a variety of surgical conditions, such as abdominal wall hernia, hiatal hernia, stomal hernia, anal fistula and pelvic floor replacement remains a challenge. There is an insufficient level of high-quality evidence in the literature on the value of bioprosthetics for soft-tissue reconstruction. An expanded knowledge about their clinical efficacy is urgently needed.

Why does a particular landscape move us? What is it that attaches us to a particular place? Tall’s From Where We Stand is an eloquent exploration of the connections we have with places—and the loss to us if there are no such connections. A typically rootless child of several American suburbs, Tall set out to make a true home for herself in the landscape that circumstance had brought her—the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. In a mosaic of personal anecdotes, historical sketches, and lyrical meditations, she interweaves her own story with the story of this place and its people—from the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois, to European settlers, to the many utopians who sensed and were inspired by a spiritual resonance here. This edition includes an introduction by William Kittredge and a foreword by Stephen Kuusisto, both highlighting the book’s significance and Tall’s exquisite skill in tracing the relationship between homelands and storytelling.
