What rhymes with puck? My brain is stuck Now I’m a poet And I should know it It’s tough sometimes To find the rhymes A poem sometimes May not have rhymes But I eschew That motely stew I find free verse To be perverse A rhyming poem My favorite tome I hired a poet But wouldn’t you know it I paid a buck But no such luck The poet hired Was quickly fired Her blackened disc Too much to risk Now I confess I do digress So, I return To the rhyme I yearn Without fail I tell my tale Through the books I muck But, no such luck The words all suck And most are yuk But what the heck I am a wreck What rhymes with puck? My brain is stuck

A great deal of research has been done on the quantitative indicators used in hockey player evaluation, but for the most part, the analysis of qualitative factors has been elusive. Until this book. Hockey Players' Personality Contribution to Team Performance examines many of the statistical tools and quantitative measures used to assess hockey players—such as goals, assists, and save percentages—and then moves beyond this with new research to help measure a player’s qualitative characteristics—or “spirit”—with an objective, scientific approach. Based on extensive interviews and research with both Canadian and Swiss hockey players, Hunter reveals six key themes or characteristics that contribute to a hockey player’s success as a “team” or “character” player—including what happens during a stoppage in play, on the bench, or in the dressing room. From these, he then offers a Player Assessment Form as a practical tool for hockey coaches, scouts, and team assistants (as well as for coaches in other team sports) to measure players’ characteristics and strengths that have previously been hard to evaluate. Informative and innovative, Hockey Player Contribution to Team Performance will appeal to all with an interest in the science of sports statistics and evaluation.

Retired NHL players Billy Sinatra and Malcolm Gordon Steven (better known as “Keeper”) have both returned to relatively normal lives after their controversial Stanley Cup win, with Billy now coaching minor-league hockey in Moose Jaw and Keeper working as his team’s goaltending coach. But their ordinary lives are about to take an unexpected turn when an up-and-coming player from Slovakia, Rhobe Otguy, is brought to their attention. Although Rhobe’s hockey skills are undeniable, if he hopes to make it to the NHL, he’ll have to overcome both the language barrier and his persistently bizarre social limitations, which not only alienate his teammates but have an investigative journalist questioning what planet he's even from. With narration and commentary from El Gordo, with whom the characters occasionally share conversation and pun-filled banter, More Hockey Stories: A Novel Perspective—Conversations with El Gordo is the entertaining and cleverly named sequel to Hockey Stories: A Novel Perspective—Conversations with El Gordo. It will bring its readers right back to their favourite local pub, sitting, sipping, and sharing amusing memories and anecdotes about the world of hockey—both on the ice and off—with all its fun, comradery, and sometimes unbelievable drama.

Like many a Canadian kid, Stephen Smith was up on skates first thing as a boy, out in the weather chasing a puck and the promise of an NHL career. Back indoors after that didn’t quite work out, he turned to the bookshelf. That’s where, without entirely meaning to, he ended up reading all the hockey books. There was Crunch and Boom Boom, Slashing! and High Stick; there was Max Bentley: Hockey’s Dipsy-Doodle Dandy, Blue Line Murder, and Nagano, a Czech hockey opera. There was Blood on the Ice, Cracked Ice, Fire On Ice, Power On Ice, Cowboy On Ice, and Steel On Ice. In Puckstruck, Smith chronicles his wide-eyed and sometimes wincing wander through hockey’s literature, language, and culture, weighing its excitement and unbridled joy against its costs and vexing brutality. In exploring his own lifelong love of the game, hoping to surprise some sense out of it, he sifts hockey’s narratives in search of hockey’s heart, what it means and why it should distress us even as we celebrate its glories. On a journey to discover what the game might have to say about who we are as Canadians, he seeks to answer some of its essential riddles.
