Dr William Wyatt emigrated to the new colony of South Australia in 1837. He became a notable pioneer and briefly held government positions including coroner and protector of Aborigines, but his major interests and influence were in the fields of cultural development, medicine and education. KEEPING A TRUST tells the story of the life of William Wyatt, and how when he approached the end of his days without an heir, he arranged to place his assets into a trust and instructed that it be used for South Australians experiencing poverty. The Wyatt Benevolent Institution was formed and since then has grown to become one of Australias leading philanthropic institutions.

By exploring Australian responses to death, this book contributes to the growing interest in what such responses reveal about our society and how we might better deal with death as a part of life. The authors - a theologian and a funeral director - look at the social history of this topic, and look squarely at the questions we persist

Never See a Need is an account of the lives and works of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in South Australia from the time of their foundation in 1866 until Mary MacKillop's canonisation in 2010. Much happened during those 144 years. There were dark times and bright times, times of growth and expansion interspersed with times of decline, times of stability and times of change, and through it all, the members of the Congregation never forgot their call to do what they could to remedy the evils and ills of their society. They were educators, but they also looked out for the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged in different ways as they moved across the landscape to wherever they were needed, always a "people on the move" but always stable in their devotion to their ministry.

The "First to Serve" is a historic work covering the first ten years of the nations oldest state police agency from 1865 to 1875. Alcohol was the genesis for the first state police force and the primary reason why several other New England states looked to establish state police forces during the second half of the nineteenth century. Journey back in time as Ron Guilmette chronicles the lives and Civil War service of these first state police officers. The First To Serve describes the first decade of the Massachusetts State Police and the hardships and political turmoil the first constables faced enforcing the first alcohol prohibition in the nation for three dollars a day.

Behind the Scenes examines planning in the City of Adelaide from 1972 until 1993 within the historical framework of City/State relations from 1836 when the Province of South Australia was founded. During this 21-year period, the City had its own planning and development control legislation separate from the rest of the State. Dr Llewellyn-Smith examines why this situation came about, why it continued for this particular period and why it ceased in 1993 when the separate legislation was repealed and the City became part of the State system under the new Development Act 1993. Behind the Scenes includes original interviews with many of the key individuals in the City and State who played influential roles during this period. Dr Llewellyn-Smith himself was the City Planner from 1974 until 1981 and then the Town Clerk/Chief Executive Officer of the Adelaide City Council from 1982 until 1993: this book, then, is both a work of scholarship and an insider's account. With a joint foreword by The Hon. Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia, and The Rt Hon. the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Stephen Yarwood.
