The old man had seen the big wolf for the fi rst time early in the spring. He was riding bareback along the creek checking his cows and looked up suddenly to see the wolf standing on the bluff south of the house. It was a mile or more away but even at the distance it looked big as a horse. Later when he came to know it better and to recognize its distinctive track no matter what ground condition he found it in the old man estimated its weight at a hundred and fifty pounds or maybe a hundred and seventy-five if its belly was full but belly full or empty, it walked over the face of his land which it lay joint claim to with authority and without fear as nothing else had walked it since the old man was a boy and the great shaggies had grazed the flats along the Palo Duro by the thousands and drank there from the deep pools. But even in that fabled time it would have walked alone a path all others had given over with news of its coming a wolf in the body of a horse. Big as a damned horse! Its paw prints along the edges of the fi elds and in the soft mud along the ditch were that big and that deep! As the days passed it walked the valley on its great feet not in evening's shadow or at false dawn as others of its kind were wont to do and had done for ten thousand years but in gaudy day over the broad land fully lighted and it did not move on seeking more remote territory as the old man had expected it to do. Somehow it seemed to be more than just a wolf and not in its enormous size alone but also in some other way which the old man could not identify and it became in his mind even as it was in reality a superwolf.

Author: Valerie Jane Gawron
Publisher: CRC Press
Total Pages: 431
Release: 2019-12-17
Genre: Psychology
ISBN: 042967273X

This two-volume set was developed to help researchers and practitioners select measures to be used in the evaluation of human/machine systems. It can also be used to supplement classes at both the undergraduate and graduate courses in ergonomics, experimental psychology, human factors, human performance, measurement, and system test and evaluation. Volume 1 of the handbook begins with an overview of the steps involved in developing a test to measure human performance, workload, and/or situational awareness. This is followed by a definition of human performance and a review of human performance measures. Situational Awareness is similarly treated in a subsequent chapter. Volume 2 presents a definition of workload and a review of workload measures. Provides a short engineering tutorial on experimental design Offers readily accessible information on human performance, workload, and situational awareness (SA) measures Presents general description of the measure Covers data collection, reduction, and analysis requirement Details out the strengths and limitations or restrictions of each measure, including any known proprietary rights or restrictions, as well as validity and reliability data

Religion in Cormac McCarthy's Fiction

Religion in Cormac McCarthy's Fiction
Author: Manuel Broncano
Publisher: Routledge
Total Pages: 195
Release: 2013-11-20
Genre: Literary Criticism
ISBN: 1317915313

This book addresses the religious scope of Cormac McCarthy’s fiction, one of the most controversial issues in studies of his work. Current criticism is divided between those who find a theological dimension in his works, and those who reject such an approach on the grounds that the nihilist discourse characteristic of his narrative is incompatible with any religious message. McCarthy’s tendencies toward religious themes have become increasingly more acute, revealing that McCarthy has adopted the biblical language and rhetoric to compose an "apocryphal" narrative of the American Southwest while exploring the human innate tendency to evil in the line of Herman Melville and William Faulkner, both literary progenitors of the writer. Broncano argues that this apocryphal narrative is written against the background of the Bible, a peculiar Pentateuch in which Blood Meridian functions as the Book of Genesis, the Border Trilogy functions as the Gospels, and No Country for Old Men as the Book of Revelation, while The Road is the post-apocalyptic sequel. This book analyzes the novels included in what Broncano defines as the South-Western cycle (from Blood Meridian to The Road) in search of the religious foundations that support the narrative architecture of the texts.
