An 18 foot tall jacket type structure was tested for three dimensional forces and deck deflections using regular and irregular waves of up to 2.5 feet in height. Theoretical studies for both regular and irregular wave forces are presented in conjunction with experimental results. In addition, a similar comparison for deck deflection and frequency response is presented in this report. Results indicate base shear, lift force, and overturning moment calculations using the range of hydrodynamic coefficients recommended by the American Petroleum Institute are in general agreement with experimentally determined values for wave frequencies between 0.3 and 0.8 Hz. Deck deflection measurements were significantly greater than those calculated using standard structural matrix techniques. The difference is concluded to be the result of inadequate analytical description of the test structure joints using a rigid joint analysis. (Author).

This book focuses on: (1) the physics of the fundamental dynamics of fluids and of semi-immersed Lagrangian solid bodies that are responding to wave-induced loads; (2) the scaling of dimensional equations and boundary value problems in order to determine a small dimensionless parameter ε that may be applied to linearize the equations and the boundary value problems so as to obtain a linear system; (3) the replacement of differential and integral calculus with algebraic equations that require only algebraic substitutions instead of differentiations and integrations; and (4) the importance of comparing numerical and analytical computations with data from laboratories and/or nature.

A thorough understanding of the interaction of waves and currents with offshore structures has now become a vital factor in the safe and economical design of various offshore technologies. There has been a significant increase in the research efforts to meet this need. Although considerable progress has been made in the offshore industry and in the understanding of the interaction of waves, currents, and wind with ocean structures, most of the available books concentrate only on practical applications without a grounding in the physics. This text integrates an understanding of the physics of ocean-structure interactions with numerous applications. This more complete understanding will allow the engineer and designer to solve problems heretofore not encountered, and to design new and innovative structures. The intent of this book is to serve the needs of future generations of engineers designing more sophisticated structures at ever increasing depths.

Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures provides a new perspective on the calculation of wave forces on ocean structures, unifying the deterministic and probabilistic approaches to wave theory and combining the methods used in field and experimental measurement.Presenting his quasi-determinism (QD) theory and approach of using small-scale field experiments (SSFEs), author Paolo Boccotti simplifies the findings and techniques honed in his ground-breaking work to provide engineers and researchers with practical new methods of analysis. Including numerous worked examples and case studies, Wave Mechanics and Wave Loads on Marine Structures also discusses and provides useful FORTRAN programs, including a subroutine for calculating particle velocity and acceleration in wave groups, and programs for calculating wave loads on several kinds of structures. - Solves the conceptual separation of deterministic and stochastic approaches to wave theory seen in other resources through the application of quasi-determinism (QD) theory - Combines the distinct experimental activities of field measurements and wave tank experiment using small-scale field experiments (SSFEs) - Simplifies and applies the ground-breaking work and techniques of this leading expert in wave theory and marine construction

Vehicle-bridge interaction happens all the time on roadway bridges and this interaction performance carries much useful information. On one hand, while vehicles are traditionally viewed as loads for bridges, they can also be deemed as sensors for bridges' structural response. On the other hand, while bridges are traditionally viewed as carriers for vehicle weight, they can also be deemed as scales that can weigh the vehicle loads. Based on these observations, a broad area of studies based on the vehicle-bridge interaction have been conducted in the authors' research group. Understanding the vehicle and bridge interaction can help develop strategies for bridge condition assessment, bridge design, and bridge maintenance, as well as develop insight for new research needs. This book documents fundamental knowledge, new developments, and state-of-the-art applications related to vehicle-bridge interactions. It thus provides useful information for graduate students and researchers and therefore straddles the gap between theoretical research and practical applications.
