Rapid Creek originates at the Pactola Reservoir dam in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Its route continues through Rapid City, SD, completing its flow as it enters the Cheyenne River, approximately 20 miles east of Rapid City. This research focuses on nonpoint source pollutants and their effects on the health of Rapid Creek within city limits. Over a period of two months, the water quality of Rapid Creek was tested at five different sites. Temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen content were the physical properties collected. Concentrations of nitrates, phosphates, chlorides and total suspended solids were also determined. A final analysis of these seven properties was performed to determine if nonpoint source pollution affects Rapid Creek.
