Excerpt from Washington Medical Annals (Bimonthly), 1909-10, Vol. 8: Including a Medical Miscellany After this statement, and after having become accustomed to the idea of Peters' ovum having been somewhere between three and eight days old, it is with some disappointment that we learn from Bryce and Teacher that their extremely young ovum was somewhere between thirteen and fourteen days of age, being the result of an abortion sixteen and one half days after coitus. The disappointment, however, is mitigated in some degree, when we find that the methods of calculation by which they determined the age of their own ovum, to be from thirteen to fourteen days would, if applied in the same manner to Peters' ovum, make that one a day older, viz fourteen to fifteen days. But even on this basis, the extremely young ovum of the authors is only one day younger than that of Peters. A child of three years of age, demanding mechanical relief, with a fatal termination. I saw this Child at the request of Dr. Mallan. It was after twelve at night that I was called to see the child with Dr. Mallan. The boy had been sick for sev eral days with what appeared a simple laryngitis with slight audi ble respiration. During the twenty-four hours preceding my visit the breathing had become more and more labored. The child's condition demanded immediate relief, which was given through the introduction of an intubation tube. The voice was only slightly hoarse. In order to safeguard the child, antitoxin was also administered. Culture proved negative. Child died on the second day after intubation, from pneumonia. Excerpt from Washington Medical Annals, 1914, Vol. 13: Bimonthly Journal of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia Shock, as we understand it today, is essentially an excessive loss of the granular protoplasm of central nerve cells. An actual loss of the substance which constitutes the stored up energy of the nerve cells, just as lead salts constitute the stored energy of certain electric storage batteries. Part of this substance, which we call chromatin, because it stains readily with methylene blue, and some other stains, is normally oxidized and burned up with every discharge of nervous energy from the cell. It has long been known that a nerve cell Well stored with chrom atin granules will respond quickly and vigorously to slight stimuli, whereas a cell containing few chromatin granules responds more slowly and sluggishly, requires stronger stimuli to cause a dis charge or nerve impulse, and will fail to respond at all to any stimulus when the granules are exhausted.
